As 9/11 winds down: At 11.30pm, 9/11/01 Bush was SOUND ASLEEP
As the country went sleepless for days, the "nesters" ended the day on a happy note and were zonked out before midnight of 9/11/01. . .

===

George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, “you’ll be sleeping downstairs. Washington’s still a dangerous place.” And I said no, I can’t sleep down there, the bed didn’t look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told the agent we’re going upstairs, and he reluctantly said okay. Laura wears contacts, and she was sound asleep. Barney was there. And the agent comes running up and says, “We’re under attack. We need you downstairs,” and so there we go. I’m in my running shorts and my T-shirt, and I’m barefooted. Got the dog in one hand, Laura had a cat, I’m holding Laura —

Laura Bush: I don’t have my contacts in , and I’m in my fuzzy house slippers —

George W. Bush: And this guy’s out of breath, and we’re heading straight down to the basement because there’s an incoming unidentified airplane, which is coming toward the White House. Then the guy says it’s a friendly airplane. And we hustle all the way back up stairs and go to bed.

Mrs. Bush: And we just lay there thinking about the way we must have looked.

Peggy Noonan (interviewer): So the day starts in tragedy and ends in Marx Brothers.

George W. Bush: That’s right — we got a laugh out of it.

The important thing is, you know, that the day ended on a happy note.

4. I was glued to tv all day.
Watching the horror over and over. And wondering where Bill Clinton was.

Do I care that he had on running shorts? Or Laura's contacts or fuzzy slippers?

About the way they looked. Like fools, imposters, clowns, rip-off artists, narcisistic assholes.
That's how you looked. Crack heads.

And he got a kick out of it. How special.

14. Great book.
I bought it for my mom, the scardy kat. She said she doesn't read, so I did. Still have it on my bookshelf. Neat observation.

6. At that time, I was still watching and tears were still falling
Our brothers and sisters in NYC pointed big bright lights on ground zero so that the they could continue to pull bodies out of the rubble. I'll never forget sitting on my couch in the dark staring at my tv screen. My body ached with grief. I remember the guilt I felt for being in the comfort of my own home thousands of miles away from NYC.

Remember that first night when we didn't have a strong grasp on how many people were killed? I recall the estimate to be anywhere from 8,000 to 10,000 people. That's not an easy thing to sleep on.

8. I remember. People holding impromptu signs up in the dark...
...cheering on the rescuers. At the time, who knew if there were people alive that could be pulled out of the rubble? Still, Bush slept.

13. "whoever is sleeping is your man"
The first thing I learned on the job,
know what it was? How to spot a murderer.
Let's say you arrest three guys for the
same killing. Put them all in jail
overnight. The next morning, whoever is
sleeping is your man. If you're guilty,
you know you're caught, you get some rest
- let your guard down, you follow?

The Usual Suspects

16. I didn't sleep well for more than a week.
Glued to the TV when I wasn't at work. And I'm in Houston & didn't have anyone in danger. (Well, I did--but didn't know it then. My cousin in the FBI's NYC office was OK.)
