2. Fear is the essence of "conservatism"

They fear their god and his hell, and they fear people who aren't afraid of their god or believe in a different god; they fear their authoritarian father-figures, and they fear people who are disrespectful of those authoritarians; they fear what their neighbors will think if they don't conform, and they fear their neighbors who don't conform, or who simply come from different cultures or countries (because they "think differently than we do"); and most of all, they fear the future and they fear their own death.
