Poll: Clinton, Spitzer leading in N.Y.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) -- On the eve of New York's Democratic primary, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Eliot Spitzer hold commanding leads in their respective bids for re-election and to replace Republican George Pataki as governor, a statewide poll reported Monday.

The poll from Quinnipiac University's Polling Institute also found former federal Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, the elder son of former Gov. Mario Cuomo, well ahead of his rivals in his bid to win the Democratic nomination for attorney general and continue his comeback quest for a political career of his own. The younger Cuomo ran a highly unsuccessful campaign for the party's 2002 nomination for governor.

3. Envision victory by 40 points.
That's what the polls suggest he'll win by over the Republican candidate. He's much beloved around here, and they had to import a Republican from Massachusetts in order to find a qualified sacrificial lamb. Plus the state Republican party is in the process of slowly and painfully killing itself, which is helpful.

7. Pataki wasn't that bad, but he seems to have gone insane lately.
He used to be king lump, basically an inactivist governor. Lately, though, he's made several very strange/stupid moves, such as opposing a minimum wage hike, and some other things. It's generally agreed that he's thinking about running for the Republican nomination for President in 2008. There are no words to describe how incredibly crazy that is. Not only does he have less than no pull to bring NY to the Republican column electorally, but he'd be slaughtered in the Repub primary. And yet, the nutty bastard appears to actually be doing just that, including running to the right on a handful of issues.
