Muslims Demand Apology From Redding Mayor

(AP) SACRAMENTO Sacramento-area Muslims are asking for an apology from the mayor of Redding, who said some Muslims find it acceptable to lie, cheat and murder.

During an event last week commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Murray said Shiite Muslims believe they "are duty-bound by religious law to lie, cheat, steal, kill all who do not worship their version of Allah."

"Folks, they're not like us," he told those who attended an annual remembrance vigil on the steps of the Shasta County Courthouse, in the city about 160 miles north of Sacramento. His comments were reported by the Redding Record Searchlight.

He said he was referring instead to the Wahhabi sect -- a brand of Islam most prevalent in Saudi Arabia and practiced by Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.

"At no time did I say all Muslims are bad folks," Murray said in his statement.

He said his intention was to address "the secular and religious wars our Judeo-Christian nation is fighting."

6. One of my favorite places but very insular

Before I retired my job took me to Redding on occasion. It's a terrific setting in the foothills of the Cascades, great hunting, hiking and fishing nearby. But its so fucking far from anything the worldview of those that live there seems to be pretty narrow. Shasta County where Redding is located went heavily for bush in the 2000 and 2004 elections. Minorities are really in the minority and diversity is just a word in the dictionary. Plus the timber industry has gone into the shitter and unemployment and drug use are on the rise. Like most of rural CA meth labs are plentiful. I'm not familiar with the background of the mayor but non-CA DU'ers must realize that parts of this blue state are as red as Idaho or Utah.
