The reason Afghanistan has been so controversial, along with the struggles to have control over the area, have to do with the oil reserves and the proposed pipeline that would benefit the oil and gas companies, meaning Saudi Arabia and the US.

The larger goal is to eventually isolate Uzbekistan, where the largest untapped oil reserves lie, as much as possible in a bid to keep Russia and China from having mineral rights control: Whoever controls the black gold, controls the world.
