Man breaks leg after he, daughter jump off Lantana Bridge
Jesus--what a fucking idiot...If his daughter was scared of heights before--- think about now.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

A man and his 10-year-old daughter were on an evening bike ride when he suggested that they jump off the Lantana Bridge into the Intracoastal Waterway, police said.

The frightened little girl agreed, and at 7:45 p.m. Monday, Troy Stewart, 31, held his daughter's hand and they dropped about 25 feet into the water.

Meagan Stewart was not hurt, but her father broke his leg when he hit the bottom.

"He thought he could break her fear of heights by doing that. Instead he broke his leg," said Lantana Police Capt. Andy Rundle.

"I wouldn't consider this an appropriate method of trying to break your kid of a phobia. Considering he got hurt, she could've just as easily got hurt," Rundle said.

It's unclear whether Meagan overcame her fear of heights, but she did learn about the dangers of jumping off a bridge.

Meagan had to swim about 50 feet to shore and seek help for her father.

3. 25 feet's not too bad.
Probably hit a rock.

Check for rocks before you dive, people. It's not that hard.

8. I used to jump off those Intracoastal Waterway bridges all the time
Stupid teenagers! I don't know what the 31 yo's excuse was. Anyway, 25 feet is a small one. We used to go off the maintenance platforms of the big humpback bridges over the waterway. The first time I went, I hit with my arms outstretched, and they slapped the water so hard I had huge red welts running the length of my arms for a week. But I want back! If you jump into the channel, directly under the hightest point of the bridge, you have lots of water, but you have to have someone watching for approaching boats. Plus, from the platform, you also have to jump out about 10 feet to clear the wooden jetties protecting the concrete pillars. If you went straight down of the platform there was no fear of hitting the jetties, but the water was barely 10 feet deep. If you didn't immediately point your toes and so you arced back up to the surface, you'd hit bottom. The jumpt from the platform was about 40 feet. The top of the bridge was about 55 feet.

7. God I swear that is out of the Onion.
It got me laughing pretty hard. A sense of humor knowing that the girl came out O.K. (sans phobia?) and her Pa had to get his problems attended to after pater familias misfire.
