An arrest warrant has been issued in Hancock County for a suspect identified in a weekend assault that appears to be motivated by alcohol and prejudice.

A witness identified Robert A. Dow, 59, of Franklin as the man who shouted racial slurs and then kicked a 21-year-old black woman Saturday night in Hancock.

The woman told police that when she pulled into the parking area she noticed a red pick-up truck with several men standing around drinking beer.

For no obvious reason, one of the men began shouting "white power" and racial epithets toward the woman, according to her statement.

The man, who police now believe was Dow, then threw a half-full can of beer toward an open window of the woman's car. It struck her on the right triceps.

Dow then approached her vehicle, opened the door, and kicked the woman in the stomach, according to police.

The article goes on to say that the victim is seven months pregnant. The attack brought on premature contractions, and she had to go to the hospital.

The full article in the paper edition of the BDN reports that the other men did not join in the attack, but watched it and "laughed the entire time".

It's interesting they commit relatively few. But again, she has no basis for saying they haven't been committed nor covered because they have. And frankly, when they do it, it's not a societal issue most of the time, but rather an individual issue. It's covered when whites do it because it's part of the historical oppression that still exists.

Once again, because it's part of a larger societal problem. Hate crimes also usually don't make national news unless they are particularly heinous or symbolic. In this case, the woman was pregnant (unusually heinous) and was symbolic of remaining historical racism.

Most of my experiences have occurred during work (at customer sites) or from a co-worker/work acquaintance. I work as a computer technician and I guess this industry is just packed full of freeper types (at least in this area). I noticed the stats on hate crimes slowly crept up again under this admin. Reports of burning crosses on interracial couples lawns (such a classic :eyes:), dragging black men to their deaths, hate crimes against illegal immigrants that can't report the violence--from fear of deportation. I've read too many reports regarding crimes against the glbt community as well.

Th day that asshole stated publicly that he wanted to make gay marriage illegal, he made it open season on gays and anyone that isn't like them. :mad::cry::puke: He basically said, it's ok to hate them for not being like you--and people like this are all too happy to oblige.

Regardless of where a DU'er is from the North or the South, what you said points out the overall truth that should unite us here on DU.
