... from sinus infections routinely. In my case, they were related to allergies, thusly.
When you are allergic to inhalants, your sinuses become inflamed. They produce excess mucus. Mucus is a great bacterial culture medium, and the raw inflamed sinus tissues are easily invaded by the bacteria.
Once you get into this syndrome, it is very hard to overcome it. You have to
1) reduce your allergic reactions either by taking medications or reducing exposure to allergens
2) clear the inflammation in your sinuses. the quickest way to do so is using the inhalant steroids, such as flonase, beconase, vancenase, etc. flonase was very effective for me, and seemed to have no side effects. BUT - squirting these things up your nose is pointless if your sinuses are full of drainage. So, see 3 :)
3) get the gunk out of your head. the best way is with a neti pot - a gizmo that lets you draw warm saline water into each sinus and literally wash it out. If you can only do one thing, do this. You don't even really have to get a neti pot, (about $10), you can use a bowl of warm water and do it that way.
I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on DU. I'm speaking from 10 years of miserable experience!
