Frist: Health Care For Gitmo Terrorists "Better Than Many Americans Get"
Frist lauds Gitmo's state
He says conditions good; others say indefinite lockup cruel

By RICHARD POWELSON, powelsonr@shns.com
September 13, 2006

WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said Tuesday his recent trip to the Guantanamo Bay detainee camp showed excellent prison conditions, including "24/7 medical care - better than many Americans" get.

Nevertheless, Frist, a former physician, said that the Senate must authorize military commissions to prosecute the alleged terrorists at Guantanamo in Cuba and elsewhere for "war crimes." He visited the prison with two other senators Sunday to prepare for Senate debate on legislation to legalize the commissions after a U.S. Supreme Court decision in June said they lacked congressional approval.

10. He'll never acknowledge that the family business that made him rich
is a large part of the problem.

But yes, he did just admit that a lot of us don't have access to health care at all.

I've had no insurance since 1987 and I have a serious illness. Oh, and to pile irony on top of insult, I'm an RN.

22. oh that is so WRONG
I wonder how much illness can be atributed not just to the preventable-care aspect lost due to no insurance, but the sheer amount of worry that people suffer.

away from doing this!

8. I don't get it, they're really being dumb about it
Its a natural issue for Dems, one they should be campaigning heavily on.

15. HealthCo and Big Pharma have a lock on both parties.
The public overwhelmingly supports universal health care. The corruption is deep and pervasive and it is going to take a crack up of major proportions, on the scale of '29-32, to bring about real change.

5. He's probably right for all the wrong reasons
A large percentage of Americans don't have any health care at all. It doesn't excuse the treatment of prisoners in Gitmo.

And the GOP is to blame.

6. Well, what does that say about how Bush cares for Americans?
Should we all line up for one-way tickets to Gitmo, just so we can get that annoying boil lanced without having to sweat the co-pay?

What does that lame and stupid statement MEAN, really?

Perhaps Fristie is diagnosing them by distance-video...there's some great care for ya!!

7. And of course he doesn't see the irony in what he says.
Frist's HMO-Mogul family is one of the prime profiteers in a system that denies health care to millions of Americans. These people are incapable of shame.

11. LOL! Classic!
So thanks to Congress not passing a decent health care bill, the cat torturer acknowledges that detainees in a torture facility are getting better health care than we are. Nice.
