Elie Wiesel calls on UN to expel Iran.

"If the Holocaust-denying, nuclear bomb-building, terrorism-sponsoring president of Iran thinks he's going to flit into New York next week for the U.N. General Assembly and escape unchallenged, boy is he going to be in for a surprise. Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel yesterday added his name to a small but high-powered international group of private citizens who are pushing to have Iran thrown out of the United Nations in response to Iran's violations of the 1948 Convention to Prevent and Punish the Crime of Genocide...

The legal effort in which Mr. Wiesel is involved, established at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, includes a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Dore Gold, and a former Israeli ambassador to America, Meir Rosenne. "It is hard to believe that at a time when the president of Iran is making statements denying the Holocaust and does not hide his intention to erase Israel from the map, the enlightened world is planning to host Ahmadinejad at the opening of the General Assembly instead of evicting his country from the U.N. altogether," the group said in a statement issued yesterday..."

Hmm... Expulsion to from the U.N. Seems reasonable enough. A country that's going to habitually violate U.N. resolutions is an impediment to meangingful diplomacy, right? Now, let me see, which country has violated more U.N. resolutions than any other???

EDIT: http://jta.org/page_view_breaking_story.asp?intid=4681

"A Jewish-led campaign aims to expel Iran from the United Nations.

Nobel Prize laureate Elie Wiesel and lawyers Irwin Cotler and Alan Dershowitz are backing the Jerusalem Council for Public Affairs’ campaign.

The group will circulate a document calling for the United Nations to oust Iran because it has violated the U.N. Charter with its threats to destroy Israel.

Meanwhile, Edgar Bronfman, president of the World Jewish Congress, urged U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to redisplay a U.N. Holocaust exhibit during next week’s visit by Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has denied the Holocaust and called for Israel to be wiped off the map. "

2. Elie Wiesel has become a tool of the war campaign against Iran.
One of many who just don't get which nation is the major threat to peace on the planet.

12. You're thinking of someone else.
Elie Wiesel is the author of "Night", an excellent book that chronicles his experiences during the Holocaust. He's also the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, which makes this news, if it's credible, all the more disappointing.

Elie Wiesel joins call to expel Iran from the UN

Nobel Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel has joined a group of prominent Israelis calling for the expulsion of Iran from the United Nations.
“We know how Ahmadinejad’s move begins, but we do not know how this ends,” Wiesel said at the opening of the UN General Assembly Meetings in New York this week.

The group, which was created by the Jerusalem Center for State and Public Affairs, demands that Iran be expelled from the world body for the remarks made by its president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and for “repeated violations of the principles of the UN’s charter.”

The group also plans to expose Ahmadinejad’s violations of the “treaty against genocide.” The group includes prominent figures such as former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dore Gold, former ambassador to France and the US Meir Rosen, former head of international affairs in the State Prosecutor’s Office Irit Kahan, former Director General of the Foreign Ministry Eitan Benzur and other legal experts.

Elie Wiesel joins call to expel Iran from UN

Nobel Prize laureate joins group of Israeli legal scholars, public figures calling for Iran’s removal from int’l body; ‘it is hard to believe that when Ahmadinejad is denying the Holocaust the enlightened world is planning to host him at General Assembly,’ group says; former ambassador to US Rosenne: Nobody will be able to claim that we did not know and therefore did not react

Dan Bentsur Published: 09.12.06, 19:05

With the opening of the UN General Assembly on September 12, 2006, Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel has joined a call by Israeli legal scholars and public personalities who are calling for the expulsion of Iran from the UN due to the statements of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and other members of the Iranian national security establishment.

The group said in a statement that it was established at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs “in order to warn of the violations by the Iranian president of the 1949 Convention to prevent and punish the crime of genocide and to propose the initiation of legal proceedings against Ahmadinejad within the UN framework.”

Members of the group include Dr. Meir Rosenne, former legal advisor to the Foreign Ministery and Ambassador of Israel to the US and France; Dr. Dore Gold, former Israeli Ambassador to the UN and today President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs; lawyer Irit Kahan, former director of the International Affairs Department at the State Attorney’s Office; Eytan Bentsur, former director-general of the Foreign Ministry; attorney Justus Reid Weiner, former director of the American Law and External Relations Department of the Justice Ministry, and MK Danny Naveh.

“The Jerusalem Center’s legal group has determined that the Iranian president is in violation of the 1949 Genocide Convention, which outlaws incitement to genocide,” Dori Gold said.

And I had thought that Dershowitz had lost his mind. What is going on here?

18. Might wanna toss Sudan first...
since they're actually practicing genocide, not just talking about it.

Uganda, Ivory Coast, Sri Lanka...

Lots worse stuff than Iran out there, but the Wiesenthal Center does what it does. Now that all the old Nazis are dead, they have to find something to do.

Might talk to Israel about a little overreaction in Lebanon and Gaza...

Nah, can't do that.
