NBC last night

On some "news" program they ran a lengthy interview with a woman I didn't recognize. She had long, straight blond hair and a lot of too-red lipstick. The atmosphere of the interview, conducted in a faux-cozy residential-looking room, rather than a cold studio, gave an air of intimacy and warmth.

Her answer to the first question I heard was a reflection on her emotionally distant father during her childhood, and she speculated that this might have led to her subsequent behavior. To be honest, I thought that she was either a porn star or maybe the wife/girlfriend of an athlete or the like.

Nope. She was none other than Debra LaFave, a teacher who admitted having sex with one of her male fourteen year old students.

This program followed yet another installment of the endless (and endlessly exploitive) "To Catch a Predator" series, wherein suspected male pedophiles are lured into sting operation under the pretense of a meet-up with a willing young girl.

So why does NBC base a whole series on its dilligent efforts to hunt down and humiliate one type of "sexual predator" while giving the red carpet treatment to another? When we the last time a male teacher got a cozy interview after admitting sex with a fourteen year old female student?

The whole premise of the "To Catch a Predator" series is to expose these dangerous men to the light of justice. But a similarly dangerous woman is made to seem a sympathetic figure rather than an admitted offender.

My wife noted yesterday that some morning "news" program devoted about 45 seconds to all the news from around the globe, then quickly raced into a fifteen minute piece on that insipid "Big Brother" show.
