Did you know that I was the first Senator to have a website?

The site keeps me in constant touch with the people of
Massachusetts and others across the country. It's been
particularly true in recent years, as the TedKennedy.com
community has grown to hundreds of thousands of committed
Democrats.

The broadband era has brought a new wave of participation in
our democracy. People read more, speak out more, and take
more action on important issues. That benefits Democratic
candidates, and other causes that need our help.

Now all of that is in jeopardy.

Some telephone and cable companies want new caps and
controls on what we can or cannot do online. They are
threatening the concept of "Net Neutrality" -- the principle
of a free and open Internet, in which the companies that
control the infrastructure cannot use that power to control
the content.

We need to build an ever faster Internet in order to compete
effectively in the world, create good jobs here at home, and
meet the needs of our citizens. This mission is extremely
important and Congress has an essential role in ensuring
that such an infrastructure is built.

Net Neutrality ensures that the Internet will continue to be
an open forum for free speech. Please watch this important

Net Neutrality is needed to protect the innovative,
democratic spirit that has characterized the Internet from
the start. All Americans should have equal access to the
Internet, and it must remain free from discrimination and
anticompetitive behavior.

We've watched President Bush and his rubber-stamp Congress
hand over our national security to his special interest
cronies. We've watched them try to turn over much of their
legislation to corporate interests, be it the bankruptcy
bill or the energy bill.

We cannot allow them to hand over the best tools of
communication in our democracy to the telecom industry.
