He's done some backtracking since then, but he was a jerk. A real shithead. That said, I support him in this race, but she isn't talking out her ass--there WAS, and still IS in DC, an awareness of his old attitude--he made NO BONES about it and wouldn't shut the fuck up when he was SECNAV and ASD. He wrote WHY WOMEN CAN'T FIGHT speeches and papers and plastered his sexist opinion everywhere. That said, it was quite a popular sentiment back then--the Reaganites lapped it up. It ensured that a whole generation of very capable female leaders were denied combat opportunities, though they were gradually being permitted to retain their careers despite things like marriage and pregnancy.

His best defense is to--QUICKLY, NO DELAY, NO OBFUSCATION--say he's grown up, doesn't feel that way now, was misguided and a big ass, he APOLOGIZED, and is INTELLIGENT enough to put ASIDE foolish ideas (and he did that MANY YEARS AGO), unlike Macaca/Noose/Stars and Bars Howdy Doody Allen. Follow up by going on the attack with some snarky shit about Allen having to go back THREE DECADES to toss some shit, when Macaca Feeeelix only has to go back three lousy weeks to step in his OWN shit....

I've been disappointed that he did do that. After all the whole "youthful indiscretion" worked for Henry Hyde. And while that was in the far past, Allen's more recent sexist move (VMI, as a post above reminded me) is a lot closer to today. Plus Allen was in an executive position at the time, whereas Webb was at a lower level and I believe women were barred from combat by law at the time, not so in the case of Allen.
