I'm considering solemnly pledging NOT to listen to, watch, or be on DU during the results of the 2006 election.

WHY??

Because the last time I did this, ie didn't follow the returns (1998) was the last time democrats won anything BIG. My son (not much of a political junky) called me about 10:00pm election day 1998 and said "Mom, turn on the radio or TV!!! We even won the governorship in IA." (I was convinced TBransted would be IA governor forever.)

I followed 2002 on DU and watched all our hopes and dreams go down. The results in GA were especially awful (Cleland losing after being FAR ahead in the polls the day before.) A conservative colleague said the repubs won b/c W appealed to his christian base for help and they prayed and voted a win for him. It was only much later that many began to suspect 2002 was a trial run for election manipulation/stealing for 2004.

(And never forget the 'coincidental' death of Wellstone and the media spin/attack on the funeral.)

And 2004---democrats had many more new registrations than the republicans, massive GOTV campaigns---and lost. The repubs had learned from FL2000; they made sure W won the popular vote to 'legitimize' the electoral win. (Coburn won the senate race in OK??? when the democrat running against him was ahead in the polls the day before?? haven't we heard this story before??) And we all know the sad tale of Blackwell and OH.

The excitement on DU before 2002 and 2004, the confidence that so many (esp in 2004) now saw through bushco lies, and the stunned disbelief when it all fell through. And the slow (after 2002) and the fairly rapid (after 2004) realization that the republicans had plotted and won another end-run around the American people.

So, should I repeat my actions of 1998??? I have to admit I've had the superstition that my following it all in 2002 and 2004 jinxed the democrats..

1. Democratic candidates in 2002 and 2004 didn't know how to fight
They just wagged their fingers and smiled for the cameras and acted like the election season was one big fat picnic.

But we know better.

We always have.

And any candidate who doesn't run as though the future of our nation depends on it is just asking for trouble.

2. hee hee I can so relate
I often have this sense that when I care too much about any legislative issue and follow it obsessively it invariably fails :-| !
That being said I don't know that you should actually follow through with this :)...but I can definitely relate to the feeling!

3. No offense but you give yourself way to much credit...
"I've had the superstition that my following it all in 2002 and 2004 jinxed the democrats..."

Please!.... You make it sound like you were the only one that voted!! :nopity:

Why wouldn't you want to be near friends and allies on that day? Win or lose?

I know I'd rather be with my friends! Be it on a messageboard or at a celebration party!

Get a grip! Have a cold or hot beverage! Enjoy friday night! ;)

:toast:
