David Satcher & Rubens Pamies

David Satcher & Rubens Pamies argue that there are health disparities in the United States due to race and ethnicity. They use statistical data and charts to make their case that inequalities exist in access to health care and immunizations, as well as treatment. David Satcher served as U.S. Surgeon General and Director of the Center for Disease Control. He co-edited this book with Ruben Pamies.

David Satcher was formerly the director of the Center for Disease Control and formerly the US Surgeon General. Satcher received his undergraduate degree from Morehouse College in Atlanta and his M.D. and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. He is on the Board of Directors of Johnson and Johnson, Inc. Currently, he is the director of the National Center for Primary Care Medicine at the Morehouse School of medicine. Dr. Rubens Pamies is the chair of Medicine at Meharry Medical College in Nashville and is also vice chancellor academic affairs and dean for graduate Studies at University of Nebraska Medical Center. He received his baccalaureate degree from St. Johns University, his medical degree from State University of New York in Buffalo in 1986, and completed his residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at Cornell-North Shore University Hospital. Currently, Pamies is the vice chancellor academic affairs and dean for graduate Studies at University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Washington - It has taken libertarians some time to figure it out. For years they’ve been having their pockets picked by honey-voiced Republicans vowing to end Big Government.

Like their odd bedfellows in the Republican coalition — the religious conservatives who have waited more than 30 years for the GOP to legislate wholesomeness — the libertarians thought they had no alternative.

Surely, the Republicans were better than the Democrats.

But now the results are in, and inescapable.

The outcome of Republican control has been everything Democrats were known for, and libertarians profess to abhor: wasteful government spending, titanic new bureaucracies, federal intrusion in private matters, elective war and a metastasizing national security state.

Now that Republicans have spent a decade in charge of Congress and five controlling the White House, the federal cesspool that the party vowed to drain “feels less like a cesspool than a hot tub,” said Stephen Slivinski, the director of budget studies at the Cato Institute.

“Republicans just don’t act like the party of Goldwater or Reagan anymore,” he told his fellow libertarians at the think tank here last week.

The era of Big Government isn’t over, as Bill Clinton once professed. “It’s been replaced by something far worse,” said Slivinski, “the era of Super-Sized Government — and for that we have Republicans to thank.”

Guenter Lewy

Guenter Lewy chronicles the Armenian Massacre of 1915 which took place in the Eastern part of the Ottoman Empire during WWI. Mr. Lewy examines both the Turkish and Armenian sides of the conflict and proposes that a number of the Armenian deaths were caused by illness and starvation during their relocation to the mountainous regions of Turkey. Mr. Lewy explains the contrasting opinions of what happened during the conflict and compares the events of the Armenian massacre to those of the Holocaust.

Guenter Lewy is a professor of political science at the University of Massachusetts. He also has taught at Columbia University in New York and Smith College in Massachusetts. Mr. Lewy is a historian and writes for the Contributor, a magazine that covers politics and international affairs. Born in Germany, Lewy immigrated to Palestine and then to the United States in 1939 at the age of 15. Currently, Lewy resides in Washington, D.C .

2006 Roosevelt Reading Festival: Robert Rosen

Robert Rosen disputes the long-standing belief that President Franklin D. Roosevelt abandoned the Jews in Europe his book, "Saving the Jews: Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Holocaust." He argues that President Roosevelt was not a passive bystander to the deaths of Jews but instead led an administration that dealt with Nazi persecution. Mr. Rosen believes President Roosevelt has been unfairly criticized for his failure to save the Jewish passengers aboard the St. Louis in 1939, his failure to change immigration laws, his failure to speak against the Holocaust, and his refusal to bomb Auschwitz. This symposium is part of the Roosevelt Reading Festival in Hyde Park, New York. This event was held at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum and home of FDR National Historic Site.

Robert Rosen is a lawyer and author. He graduated from the University of Virginia, with a major in history. He obtained his law degree from University of South Carolina in 1973. Mr. Rosen served as assistant corporation counsel for the city of Charleston from 1976 to 1985. Later, he became the general counsel for the Charleston County School District from 1983 to 2003 and for the Charleston Housing Authority from 1984 to 2003. He has authored "A Short History of Charleston," " Confederate Charleston" (1994), "The Jewish Confederates" (2000), and "Charleston, Crossroads of History" (2003).

42. A Wonderful, Well-Researched Answer to All the Lies, Finally

This was a really great program, and it gives a lot of information from a great new book that answers, finally, a generation of anti-Roosevelt lying and covering-up of evidence, from many different sources determined to destroy the reputations of every great Democratic President that ever was. The introduction to the speaker described the book as "a compelling argument" and as great "historical detective work," and it was.

The author, Robert Rosen, began by telling what prompted the book. On a trip to the Holocaust Museum in Boston, Rosen read an inscription on a monument there: "By late 1942, the United States and its Allies were aware of the death camps, but did nothing to destroy them." That manipulation did it, and Rosen set about discovering the truth. There is by now a huge amount of this kind of "crap" written by many people, almost none of whom have done any research, and all of which by now has come to present an overwhelming image of Franklin Roosevelt as an "anti-Semite," and America as "standing by and doing nothing," even as "culpable," as the Nazis built up the concentration and death camps, and started rounding up Jews.

The first incident described on this program was that of the St. Louis (or Saint Louis), the ship with Jewish refugees fleeing Germany, that was sent back to Europe. Many people believe that the ship came to New York, and was sent back "to Germany" "by Roosevelt." It didn't happen that way at all. The ship sailed from Hungary, May of 1939, docked at Cuba, and when officials there learned that passengers had purchased Visas, illegal in Cuba at that time, they ordered it deported. The Roosevelt Administration intervened, the State Department tried to negotiations, tried to get Cuba to let passengers get off in Cuba, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee even sent down a lawyer with a large amount of money, to bribe officials to let the ship pass, bribes being common in corrupt pre-Castro Cuba. When that failed and the ship was sent back to Europe, the FDR Administration, through continued efforts, got it sent to England, where it was safe. Many passengers got off and stayed there, others went on and got off at Antwerp, Belgium; two-thirds of the passengers survived the Holocaust. They knew Roosevelt had saved them, and sent a wire, "Our gratitude is as immense as the ocean on which we are now floating."

There was a lot of really helpful background information on why immigration was cut, why the Allies did not just bomb the camps, and all these other fake "arguments" and attacks. The Congress severely cut back immigration during the 1920s, before Roosevelt was even there, as an after-effect of World War I. First, the same type of atmosphere existed then as now, where the huge waves of immigration that had been happening for generations was starting to change society, and there was a backlash, so it was a general political feeling; add to that, the Germans had sent saboteurs disguised as "immigrants," who blew up munitions plants near New York City, there were calls from radicals of all extremes for "revolutions," and many were Slavic, Russian, Jewish, or Polish immigrants, so there were backlashes. By the '30s, America was in a deep economic Depression, with tens of millions unemployed, unsaleable goods, banks failing, savings lost, bankruptcies, home foreclosures, the stock market crash, a terrible catastrophe here. Immigration was cut back then too, as people here could not afford it. Further, half of all immigrants to the U.S. between the years 1938-1940 were Jews; the U.S. accepted two-thirds of all Jews fleeing, all other countries combined only accepted one-third. Russia signed a pact with Hitler.

The claim that the U.S. "ignored" the escalating Nazi threat, "did nothing," and did not bomb, when presumably they should have, was carefully explained. Roosevelt, as a matter of fact, was about the only world leader who did respond, before we were officially in the war, as things worsened. After the 1938 "Crystal Night" pogrom (massacre) of Jews, when the world first began to realize the horror that was unfolding in Europe, although the extermination camps would not be known for years, Roosevelt recalled our Ambassador to Germany--we would not have another there until the Nazis were gone--and said at a press conference, "I myself could scarcely believe that such things could occur in a 20th century civilization." (It reminded me of the "Disappeared" of Argentina during the 1970s, after the military junta, when President Jimmy Carter alone criticized it, and imposed sanctions.) FDR made many public denunciations of Hitler and the Nazis from 1942 on, they criticed the (fallen French) appeasing Vichy government for deporting Jews to Nazi Germany, and announced that Nazi war criminals would be punished after the War, the beginning of the Nuremberg War Crimes trials. The New York Times had a front page story, December 1942, where Roosevelt denounced, "in the strongest possible terms, this bestial policy of cold-blooded extermination," condemning the German government's "intention to exterminate the Jewish people in Europe."

We were at war already with one of the most criminally genocidal and vicious of all armed forces, the Japanese who had attacked us, and who had murdered some 20 million Asian citizens, who had concentration camps, death camps, "medical experimentation" like the Nazis, and "sex slaves" by way of kidnapped women in conquered countries. Later, our forces were bound up with the huge and hugely important Normandy invasion, and to have removed them would probably have cost us the war. People don't realize, as the author put it, "Roosevelt was defending the whole world" at this point. Bombing railroad tracks leading to and from camps would have accomplished exactly nothing, as they would have been rebuilt, there were multiple tracks to and from each camp anyway, and, since there was no "pin-point bombing" then, it would have been extremely dangerous, if it would have succeeded at all--some 70% of all crews flying these scouting or bombing missions were killed.

A very interesting part of this program today was the telling of the story of Raoul Wallenberg, the saintly and extremely brave "Swedish diplomat" who by the trickery of Sweden's supposed "neutrality," and many, many fake passports, picked people at random who were being put on trains to the camps, whoever looked at all like the passport picture, and got them removed and saved, as "citizens" of Sweden. It turns out, Wallenberg was an agent working for Roosevelt's War Refugee Board, which Roosevelt had set up earlier. Carrying out the orders of Roosevelt, and with funding from the Board and from American Jewish groups, Wallenberg was able to save thousands. There were other operatives working similarly, but Wallenberg was one of the most successful. (This also reminded me of Carter: remember when the Iranians took hostages at the U.S. Embassy there, and another group was smuggled out "by the Canadians" at their Embassy? It turns out, it was a Carter CIA operation, with Canada providing only cover.)

This author has done a great service, redeeming the great Roosevelt name, after all these world-saving things Roosevelt did, and now all the years of lies, from both Republicans and as here, even Jewish groups. When FDR died, one rabbi, David Katz, gave a eulogy that included a description of Roosevelt as "a powerful and sympathetic friend and spokesman" on behalf of the underprivileged, who cared and who helped. In my household, growing up, both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt were considered saints, the greatest people who were ever in the White House, and the saviors of our Nation and the modern world. They were the highest things that rich people can be--they were traitors to their class, and they used their power to help those who could not otherwise fight back. This book is just another person fighting back, and restoring the reputation of the great Roosevelt, to whom we owe more than we will ever know. Just compare all this with the current occupants...God help us.

Janis Kearney

Janis Kearney was the first official presidential diarist, recording President Clinton's daily life on the job from 1995 until he left office in 2001. Described as "part historical narrative, and part oral history", "Conversations: From Hope to Harlem" draws from Kearney's work as Clinton diarist and interviews she conducted with a variety of African-American leaders. In this event from the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Arkansas, Janis Kearney discusses the book and is followed at the lecturn by remarks from former President Clinton.

Arkansas native Janis F. Kearney, a writer, lecturer and oral historian grew up in southeast Arkansas in a family of 17 children. She became publisher of the Arkansas State Press Newspaper, in 1987. Janis Kearney worked on the Clinton/Gore campaign as minority media outreach director. She worked with the White House Media Affairs Office before being appointed as the director of public affairs and communications for the U.S. Small Business Administration, where she worked until 1995. In 1995 she became President William Jefferson Clinton's personal diarist, serving in that role for more than five years.

On the occasion of the 20th reunion of his Nanjing college class, author John Pomfret decided to reacquaint himself with his classmates. He writes about what he learned, in his new book, titled "Chinese Lessons: Five Classmates and the Story of the New China." During a talk about his book, Mr. Pomfret tells of the death of a classmate's father who was killed for being an intellectual; of another classmate who labored in the fields rather than participate in an arranged marriage; and of a third classmate who was forced to publicly denounce his father. In the book, Mr. Pomfret examines China's cultural and economic transformation from totalitarianism.

John Pomfret studied Chinese history at Stanford University. Over the past 2 decades, Pomfret has visited China twice, as a professional journalist and as an eyewitness to the events in Tiananmen Square in 1989. He was the Beijing Bureau Chief for the Washington Post. Currently, he is the Los Angeles Bureau Chief to the Washington Post.

Mr. Boehlert looks at the way the media covered the investigation into Karl Rove's role in the Valerie Plame outing, Whitewater, the Terry Schiavo right to die case, and Al Gore's 2000 presidential bid. He also examines the Bush and Clinton administrations' manipulation of the press and suggests that liberals need to learn how to better articulate their message to the press. Strand Bookstore in New York City hosted this event.

Eric Boehlert is a journalist and a contributing editor at Rolling Stone. He writes extensively on media, politics, and pop culture. His writings appear in the Hufffington Post website and Salon.com.

Professor Gallagher discusses events leading up to the Battle of Antietam, the battle itself, and the political issues affected by Antietam. Fought on September 17th, 1862, the battle of Antietam is still the bloodiest day in American military history with over 23,000 killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of combat.

Gary Gallagher has written six books and edited dozens of others. His works include "The Confederate War" Harvard University Press, 1997, "Lee and His Generals in War and Memory" Louisiana State University Press, 1998, and "Lee and His Army in Confederate History" University of North Carolina Press, 2001. Ms. Huner-Gault is the author of "In My Place," a memoir about her experiences at the University of Virginia.

55. crap, gonna miss the book on diamonds

i'm in the city at that time on monday, gonna miss it. ever since that great Nat. Geo. (or was it Frontline?) documentary on diamonds, which started, by the way, as an attemted light and nostalgic look at the world of diamonds and ended up being an expose' on one of the most cruel unseen monopolies, i've been anti-diamonds. haven't bought a diamond since. debeers doesn't need my money.

the australian diamond company looks to have successfully broken away from the monopoly -- they specialize in beautiful colored diamonds, which were initially, and in ways still are, considered of inferior quality -- but i have to double check that and whether that firm isn't abusive as well. it's one hell of a sordid story, the history of diamonds. not even my engagement ring or anything else will be diamonds.

though, as cruel as the world of sapphires, emeralds, and rubies can be i'd be really hard pressed to say no to those, though. no strangulating monopoly, but the conditions are often evil. but they are so damn pretty! :( how can i say no!? what if it came from a farmer benignly tilling his soil in sri lanka? i can't let sri lankan farmers down by pooh-pooing their windfall, now can i? please? pretty please?

56. Oh geeze. My husband bought me one of those things

and I had to find a way to tell him, we were boycotting South African apartheid! Ack! It was the weirdest thing because I don't get to turn down diamonds every day. I hope he understood. :(
