My hubby & I were watching a few moments of the O'Reilly Factor
and Bill was arguing that torture did work in most cases. I stated how funny it was that those who had never served in the military believed torture worked, but most who had severed did not.
My brilliant husband responded "of course they do, because they know even the threat of torture would work on them".
I realized he was most likely right.

1. W opens the door to torture of our troops by playing with Article 3
Powell, McCain, Warner are all against W's playing with the international rule of law. Only the chickenhawks in W's administration is for it.

Your husband is brilliant.

5. That's a basic problem with many people.
They can't imagine any way of being other than who/what they themselves are, in this case they can't imagine people successfully resisting torture.

Being angry and hateful themselves, They think everyone hates and is angry and those who say or look like they don't hate are lying. This type of person treats others in a manner consistent with their predictions/expectations about them (i.e. that others are angry and hateful) and then others react to being treated as though they were hateful in ways that confirm the expectation, so persons whose expectations have been fulfilled (by how others react to being treated as angry hateful people) feel justified in their expectations and thus reinforced in their attitudes and behavior. As you can see, it is a truly vicious circle. It called self-fulfilling prophecy (=expectations) and is based on the inability to imagine people being who they are rather than what you think they are.

6. My favorite quote on torture can be found in "Reservoir Dogs"
When Chris Penn is scolding White and Blonde about them beating up on a cop to get information on who ratted them out.

"You beat on this prick long enough, he'll tell you he started the goddamn Chicago fire but that don't necessarily make it fuckin so!!"

That's it in a nutshell. You torture someone long enough they'll simply say anything to get themselves out of it.

O'Reilly? pff he'd off his own mother to gain a couple of ratings points.
