My family does worry

We have homes, and are safe and warm and dry, and we have plenty of food, and we have clothes, and all of the things we really need, and lots of things we don't. We worry, though about the others, the ones who don't have those things. We help when we can, and I don't mean by paying taxes, that's just automatic, and isn't voluntary.

No, we try to help people who we know need help, and we try to help people we don't know, and will never meet, but we know that they need help anyway. We get sad, because no matter how much we care, and how much we give, it's not enough. We are happy that what we do helps somebody, a little, for at least a little while, but we want our society to be one where nobody ever has to depend on our good will and charity. We will still help, but we would like for what we do to be extra, not just scraping by, for the people who need it.

Babies are born, and can't support themselves, and people get old, and sick, and frail, or have accidents, and Lord knows there are floods and hurricanes and fires, and car wrecks, and all kinds of things that can wipe out our savings in a flash. So maybe we should all just be willing to help a little bit more, and do it graciously, without making people feels ashamed for needing the help.

I am retired, and sometimes, when I first wake up, it takes an hour or more for the pain in my back and neck to settle down enough for me to function. I am grateful that I don't have to drag myself to work anyway. I realize, though, that there are people who hurt just as much as me, and maybe more, but they still have to somehow find the strength to get to a minimum wage job, and even though they work hard, they are still poor.

To work, while in pain, and still be in poverty is a shame and a disgrace in this country. Too many people have to, though. Too many have to work long hours, for Little pay, and when their kids get into a little trouble, they are denounced as being uncaring, bad parents. If we in this country can care about such trivia as who wins the next round on one of the new shows, or whether the latest missing blond has been found, then surely we can summon the energy to care about our brothers and sisters, and be open handed and generous to those who need it.

One of the most important things we can do, as well, is to vote for Democrats, for progressive Democrats, who can level the playing field more, and get us out of this immoral war, and begin to rebuild and heal our own country. They money we sign away to Halliburton could be much better spent on getting America back to health, and then helping the rest of the world, instead of attacking it.

... though, it should be known that mutually supportive communities and networks do exist in the nether regions (even if most within them either don't vote at all or currently vote republican ... sad, but true). I have witnessed the most neighborly, community-spirited dependability here in rural Minnesota - political parties aside - that almost seem competitive about how many things you can do for free to help somebody in your community; I was actually a part of a discussion among rural community acquaintances where the common theme was "Can you believe that he wanted to actually pay me for helping him fix his leaky basement?!!!" It's out there, but most of those good people do not vote, or if they do, they may be (I say this tongue in cheek somewhat) "taken by the Git 'R Done model of the rural right".

My point is that it's almost depressing to see how much good-will and unpaid "community service" is done unofficially by folks who just don't know what's going on in this country right now. When all is said and done -- even if America were to become some shadowy fascist nation, which were incubating right now with the current administration's B.S. -- these folks will still be driving a 100 mph to help someone they know through someone they know despite how the political climate has unfolded. Humans will always help each other, doesn't matter if you're a republican, democrat, or non-voter. Real communities survive - it's human nature. It's one thing we can count on.

Problem is: those of us tracking all of the shit that could make the lives of these non-voters/common-folk harder and harder are currently seen in the rural/conservative view as underdogs and weak. I think Bill Maher may have said it best recently when he said: "The next Democratic candidate for president must not wait until after the election to show us his balls".

but there is just one thing that bothers me when DU'ers say it and that is that a missing person is "trivia." I realize the Natalee Holloway thing was used by the MSM to cover up other news but she is still missing, her life and her family's lives interrupted and I don't think that is "trivia." I think it is heartwrenching. Maybe because I just put myself in her mother's shoes...

I'm sitting here, reading this, and I'm blushing, because of all of your kind words. DU has been a safe haven for me since 2001 when the Republican rampage began. My post, MoseyWalker, was writing as a response to one of yours, a provocative and subtle post, designed to make us stop and think. I have been reading your posts since you started here, and have found them beautiful and inspirational.

I hope that's right, I'm not very computer knowledgeable. Again, all of you, I don't know what to say. I've seen so much wonderful writing here, so much meticulously done, painstaking research, such activism, so many excellent posts, that I can't believe my post was that noteworthy. I wish, very much, as we all do, that in November, we will be able to take control of one, or both houses of Congress.

If we do, and can reverse some of the damage of the last 6 years, or at least halt it's spread, I pray that in 2008 we can put a good, solid Democrat in the White House, and that we never forget, if we are granted the opportunity, just how close we came to losing democracy in America. We're going to do it, because we have to. Too many people depend on us to let this madness continue. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:
