I think that's all he learned about history and he's counted on that. He probably sees no real moral difference between the North and the South or the Allies and the Axis, just believing that the victor has always appeared more virtuous than the defeated. You can do anything you want -- fix elections, invade other countries, engage in torture and unlawful imprisonment -- as long as you're on top at the end of it all. Now it looks like he's not going to be victorious and that scares the hell out of him cuz he has no backup plan. He failed to learn the one important lesson of American history, that we a never great unless we are first good.

I was reminded of abusive spouses. They beat the shit out of the wife/girlfriend, and then claim that the victim MADE him do it by her actions. It's never his fault, it's always the victim's. It's the same with Iraq, Bush is saying that we didn't ask for war, but Saddam MADE us act. It's the reasons the victim is at fault that keep changing, though.

Weapons of mass destruction, being a bad, bad man, freeing the Iraqi people, spreading democracy, whatever, the abusive prez has given excuse after excuse for this fiasco, but it's never, ever, ever his fault. No, somebody MADE him do it.
