Just listened to Neil Young's "Rocking in the Free World." That set off one of those brain jump-starts.

Discuss and enlighten.

Mr. Young was quoting it ironically -- and bitterly.

Neil Young had, at that point, recently been a Reaganite. He learned better and corrected his mistake.

13. Same thing that happens every time we decide that "private charities"

must shoulder the burden of caring for those unable to care for themselves, nothing. The secular charities don't have, and the religion based won't spend, the resources needed to effectively address this tragic societal defect. This is what we had here before FDR and it was shameful then, it is worse now.

Most of the people that have the resources to really make a difference are only concerned with how many taxes it will let them evade (remember Rosie O'Donnell right after 9/11?), while the people with the empathy and will to care for them are struggling themselves and are, therefore, severely limited in what they can do.

The thing that mystifies me has always been what do the wealthy that refuse to make a difference think is going to happen to all those people? Do they really believe that they will just lay down and die (in some other neighborhood of course)? Just goes to prove that rich people are no smarter than anybody else.
