Vietnam-era Marine deserter caught at border Sat Sep 16, 1:22 AM ET

PHOENIX (Reuters) - U.S. border agents arrested a Marine deserter wanted for the last 40 years as he drove into California from Mexico, the Customs and Border Protection agency said on Friday.

Officers checking 63-year-old Victor Aguirre's car and papers at the busy San Ysidro border crossing near San Diego discovered there was a felony warrant issued by the Marines outstanding against him since 1966, during the Vietnam War.

Aguirre would likely be taken to Camp Pendleton, a Marine base north of San Diego, and be discharged without facing formal charges, the San Diego Union-Tribune quoted a Marine spokesman as saying.

1. I'm quite sure it's being done
They haven't been trumpeting their desertion numbers, but they're pretty high. Those multiple tours in Iraq are wearing a lot of good soldiers down completely and they're not going back, no matter what it takes.

Deserters are still a tiny minority, but it's happening just like it's happened in most wars.

2. One of my good friends brother is still in Canada
after all these years. on the third re-deployment to VN he headed north and never looked back. A good honest man that I am proud of because he had the balls to put in place of words to fight the illegal and immoral Vietnam war. me being a 15 month VN vet myself.

3. I'm glad they won't throw him in jail
Obviously, they haven't been looking very hard for him if it's taken 40 years.
