Bush is Captain Queeg of Caine Mutiny by LARRY JOHNSON
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 11:44 AM by Annces
George Bush is the Captain Queeg of the U.S.S. America. The ship and her crew--the American people--are endangered by his sins of omission and commission. When warned in August of 2001 by the CIA that Al Qaeda was ready to strike inside the United States, he did nothing to confront the threat. Then came 9-11. Since unleashing the dogs of war in Iraq, terrorist attacks in which people are killed and wounded have quadrupled. Surrendering the high ground earned during the Cold War against the Soviet Union, George Bush approves secret prisons, torture, and trials with secret evidence. Actions once considered unique to Soviet tyrants are now staining the garments of the cloak of American justice.

Instead of mature, measured leadership, America is saddled with a man that would probably frighten the fictional Captain Queeg. Like the character portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, George Bush compensates for his insecurity and inadequacy with shows of bravado and choleric indignation. But this ain't the movies folks. This is real. Like the crew of the U.S.S. Caine, there is a growing realization that the Captain is a little crazy. Mutiny anyone?

3. I thought this was a great post by Mr. Johnson
Indeed, can see Bush twitching and getting more paranoid. Taking it out on the poor people around him.

6. The header f this thread is wrong!!!!!!!!!!!
It was Captain Bligh of the Bounty (who by the way was one of the greatest sailers of all time) and Captain Queeg of "The Caine Mutiny".

8. You're mixing your Mutiny metaphors.
Captain Queeg is THE CAINE MUTINY. Captain Bligh is MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY. Your point is very well taken and I've been waiting for Bush to have a Queeg-esque public meltdown on TV. The last week or so he seems to be tilting more and more towards that end, but hasn't really lost all control and exploded yet. I usually change the channel the minute I see Bush on TV because he makes me ill and angry but I happened to see a chunk of the Matt Lauer/Bush interview on Keith Olbermann and was shocked at how close to the edge Bush seemed. I really thought he was insane. Apparently it is going to have to take a Queeg-like breakdown on national, live TV for people to finally wake up and take meaningful action about getting Bush out of the Oval Office.

9. Queeg was captain of the USS Caine
Bly was the captain of the HMS Bounty. Bush never made the rank of captain before he went AWOL.

13. The analogy works only so far
Unlike Smirky, Queeg wasn't a sociopath, just a man promoted far beyond his abilities. The real villain was Lt Keefer who undermined Queeg's authority and what little confidence/abilities he had by manipulated the other officers.

Also, Queeg never displayed any bravado, false or otherwise; he panicked and essentially ran the first time the Caine was in combat.

16. There is one difference however
Edited on Sat Sep-16-06 03:52 PM by notmypresident
At one time, according to the film and play, Queeg was a good man. And the truth was, with alittle loyalty he might have not broken.

Bush was never good. Period. As my daddy always said, the best part of him ran down his mama's leg.
