The stupid things are nothing more than a laptop, a tape printer, and a hunk of badly written survey software wrapped up in a spiffy plastic shell. There's MAYBE $3000 worth of hardware there. Do Diebold AND the election boards really think their software is worth $12,000 a unit?!?!?!

As for how the machines are stored, the problem is really that local registrars aren't changing their security procedures to keep up with modern technology. When I was a kid my grandparents had a polling station in their garage for a few years. I remember playing with the machines before election day, since the registrars office dropped them off a few days beforehand (there was nothing to hack...it was a collapsible booth with a punch arm). It never occurred to me that they might STILL be doing that sort of thing with the electronic machines.

I think I'll be calling my local elections office on Monday.
