ABC/Disney thinks they are omnipotent, they now have a mobile phone!
I just saw an ad for Disneymobile phones--so apparently they want to be on the level of Cingular, Nokia, Virgin, etc.

Perhaps the move to air Path to 9/11 commercial free was as Bill Maher said, merely an attempt to pander to the right with no regard for shareholders, making money, etc.

Are we going to allow Disneymobile to grow and enter any progressive homes?

 :grr:

4. Be happy to---pm me...!
:hi: so I can get parameters of what you need, etc.

It was as bad if not worse than we all thought, they were trying to brainwash all of us with that garbage they aired...and now they want to have a "communication company" with mobile phones?! We can't allow it!

18. There are two important reasons to boycott Disney.
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 03:08 AM by sfexpat2000
1. 9/11 was a tragedy, not a political opportunity. We will not longer allow anyone to use that day for political gain.

2. The public air waves belong to the public. Big business can be responsive to us or they can suffer the consequences.

Thanks, you two, for following up!

30. Great statement, sfexpat!
Perfect way to put the whole thing!

Apparently, this phone has been around a while. I found an article dated from 2005 stating Disney was bringing this to the marketplace.

Part of my reason for starting this thread was my sincere surprise with the product as I hadn't heard of it, prior to seeing the commercial.

My other reason was to remind us all, that they aired the film despite the efforts of many--now life is going on for them, their products are in the marketplace, etc. What are we doing? So many of us vowed to NOT purchase from them, but how many are following through with this?

So part of this was an effort to get us all to take stock of where we are now with our efforts, hope that makes sense... :hi::pals: I know I could have stated it better. lol. But I was frankly surprised to see they are part of the cell phone marketplace.

6. The Disney-branded cellular service is actually a good thing for parents
It allows a parent to restrict which calls a child make or take and lets a parent dole out minutes to a child to keep them from running up huge monthly usage bills (had my oldest run up a $400 bill on me once). It also includes a GPS system for keeping track of the child's location.

Just some 411.. ;)

7. Yikes...
a $400 bill. :scared: I'm sorry to hear that.

I can appreciate the features you spoke of that are more "parent friendly" than other phones. Given their stunt last week with Paths to 9/11 I hope you will understand that I don't necessarily wish them success with their mobile phone division. :)

21. Oh, I certainly understand the boycotting of ABC/Disney *BUT*
taking things to extremes and labeling anything and everything made or done by Disney is knee-jerk reactionary behavior.

9. You can also buy a 'pay as you go' phone. That's what I have.
I pay $15.00 a month. You don't get voice mail, but you can text message. And my phone has GPS. I only use the phone when I REALLY need it. So that $15.00 goes a long way. I highly recommend it for kids/teenagers. Make THEM pay the monthly fee. See how fast they learn how to not mis-use the phone. LOL.

10. Hi Dem2theMax
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 01:27 AM by bliss_eternal
Dh and I LOVE our pay as you go phone and company! We don't have the GPS, but like knowing we have cells in the event of emergencies without the hassle of contracts. But you're right, what we put on the phone goes a long way. We aren't like so many that you see out and about--phone glued to their ears. :scared: We just use as needed, when apart, checking in, etc.

I hesitated to share about our pay as you go phone as an option for a family, since we don't have kids. It works well for us, but I wasn't sure if this would be an option for those with children, not having any personally. :)

15. Hi bliss_eternal!
I'm just like you - only use the phone when I really need to check in with family. I think 'pay as you go' would be perfect for kids. I cannot understand how parents let kids get away with huge cell phone bills. What a waste of money. Talk about :scared: Hundreds of dollars for a PHONE bill? Let alone the fact that chances are pretty good other family members have cells phones. AND a land line! Double :scared: :scared:

Heck, in the dark ages, we didn't even HAVE cell phones. With all the 'conveniences' of today, it makes me wonder how we ever survived. LOL. ;)

16. Tell me about it...
:eyes: I always had a dime with me. LOL! Remember when phone calls cost a dime?!

Everytime I went somewhere new, I did a quick check to scope out all the telephone booths so I knew where to go if I needed it.

Sadly, the horror of Columbine really drove the "need for cell phones" home for many families. After 9/11--forget it! I know families that are barely scraping by, but they've got a family cell phone plan and consider it a necessity. I totally understand that. Given that so few places even have pay phone booths anymore, I can see how a family would want their kids to have one. BUT there should be limits.

Some people have gone way over the top with the cell phone use. It's beyond obnoxious. lol.

17. Uh oh. Now we're dating ourselves. LOL.
Yep. A dime. And you could find a pay phone ANYWHERE.

Remember when you actually had to stand to use the phone at home? Because it was on the wall and the handset was attached by a cord? LOL.

Even worse. We had to DIAL the number!

Proof I'm REALLY old. When I was a kid, our phone number started with LETTERS! LMAO!

I can understand how families want to be able to reach their kids. And it IS a different world after 9/11. Funny/strange. That's the first day I ever used a cell phone. Had to borrow one from a stranger in the airport. I had to ask the guy how to work it. He looked at me like I was from another planet.

I still wonder how we ever survived childhood. Wouldn't it be fun to put todays younger generation in a time tunnel and send them back to see how it was in the 'dark ages?' They wouldn't last ten minutes. LOL.

19. LOL--No way they would make it...!
if you sent today's kids back to the time of turntables and vinyl records, televisions with knobs and no remote controls, only seven or eight channels on tv, pay subscription cable, and crappy graphics on video games. Oh and shudder the thought...playing outside! :wow::rofl: I think a day without mp3's, music videos and text messaging would most certainly destroy them!

Is it possible that the reason that you had never used a cell is because many of our generation don't really see certain things as a necessity of life? I always question whether or not I NEED, whether it's a necessity or if I merely want it.

34. Guess who went to bed after her post last night? ;-)
So almost 24 hours later, here I am.

LMAO at 'playing outside.' I grew up across the street from a park. It was heaven. Playing in the sprinklers in the summer, winter (well, it was just like summer, being So. Calif. and all) we played 'Army' of all things (back in the days of Combat! on TV.) We'd be gone all day. Riding bikes, playing on the swing set, slides, etc. Just remember to 'be home before the street lights go on.'

How I LONG for the simple days. You are correct. I don't see many of todays gadgets as necessities.
I finally broke down and bought a cell phone for my parents (in their 80's) because I would worry about them when they would tell me they were going to be gone for two hours and six hours later they still weren't home. That way, at least I could call them from a land line and find them! My Dads golfing partner bought a cell phone and after deciding that he never used it, he gave it to me. If he hadn't given it to me, I still wouldn't have one. What is an MP3? LOL. ipod? HUH? My latest computer is three years old and I haven't learned how to do a darned thing on it. My brain is FULL! No more room for all these new fangled things. I can live without them.
I'd much rather spend my money on books. :)

Television with knobs? Whoever heard of such a thing? LMAO!

13. I saw the ad for this. It is being sold as a family phone
It was a scary big-brotherish commercial where the parents called up a screen which tracked where their children were located at all times.

That's EXACTLY how I felt watching the ad--Thank you for those words! It was rather 1984 wasn't it? :scared: It seemed kind of ominous and foreboding. Very creepy, to me at least.

Do they want to entertain and educate children or put little tracking devices on them?

20. And the problem with that is? Are you a parent? I am
and it would be a nice thing to have for some parents. I can certainly understand wanting to have one and all this "big-brotherish" talk is just too much extremism, imo.

Choose your battles wisely as this is one that does not need to be fought.

22. The phone is a tracking system
Disney is marketing it as a family tracking system, but that is just a label.

You appear to have no problem with Disney offering a tracking system to the general public but I do. A widely marketed tracking system in the hands of an angry freeper or a Wal-Mart anti-environmentalist makes me very uncomfortable. How about one in the hands of a child molestor? You okay with that?

How in the hell is a child molestor going to find out where my kid is? They're going to be peering over my should when I look at my phone?

If you don't want the service, don't buy it. Pretty damn simple.

If I want to use Disney's tracking system to track your kid, I will track your kid. So could anyone. Any system can be by-passed, almost every system today is being hacked and used illegally.

Go ahead, you keep your head in the sand and hand your money to the GOPer Disney in order to give your kids a nice cute and oh so safe Disney tracking system.

29. Respectfully,
I'm sorry but that's not your place, to "reign anyone in." Your observation and assumption is that these are "knee jerk" reactions. Again, you're entitled to that opinion and you've already shared it. But opinion is not the same as a fact.

Those that are interested in a boycott based on the actions of last week may take interest in this. Those that aren't are welcome to ignore us, and this thread. Again, kindly ignore us if you choose not to boycott. :)

33. Because picking on this very small aspect of Disney's business exposes
the left for the nutty extremism that is its bane (along with political correctness)

Focus on something that will have an effect. Boycotting something most people don't even know exists will have what effect?
