ut Henry Karlson, a professor of law at Indiana University, said the current gift arrangement sounds close to a different violation of tax laws that could prompt fines. A true gift, he said, is one that comes without any expectations of services rendered.
"It becomes a factual question as to whether or not this is an active conspiracy to circumvent the tax laws, whether the parties are acting on an explicit agreement or implicit agreement that this was in fact a salary for services," Karlson said.
