Why hasn't the media asked 'Why are Gas Prices falling so fast'?
Don't curious minds want to know? Doesn't this deserve a question or two?

I'm curious. Is this a trend? Is this a political ploy? Has supply increased?

Has demand decreased? I'm curious.

4. The term October Surprise has been bandied about here
and I'm beginning to believe it. On one hand I'm glad the prices are going down, but on the other I'm pissed because the timing is so perfect

6. Demand does decrease after Labor Day
Regardless of whether or not there is market manipulation, the fact that fewer people are traveling means less demand, which translates into lower prices.

20. That much, though?
I for one am driving a lot more, what with school back in session and lots more errands to run.

3. Is Bush using his oil connections to throw the election?
Not a declaration, just a question.

7. It has to do with big oil trying to help BushCo in the election. . .
and failing that, they hope to stave off an investigation when the Democrats take over in January.

9. Have you googled it?
Or are you talking strictly about the evening news?

I'd be surprised if the economic pages of many newspapers hadn't adddressed this issue.

Here's one story - http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/11/business/worldbusiness/11oil.html?_r=1&ref=worldbusiness&oref=slogin

Which addresses the issues obliquely - but it seems that the problems that had pushed oil prices so high have largely evaporated, and they have been trying to build up supply to meet rising demand and may have overproduced.

Alternatively, President Bush made a few calls and the oil market rolled over and wagged it's tail.

Whatever gets you through the night.

Bryant

12. This was brought up yesterday at my family reunion. The
overwhelming majority at the reunion agreed it's because we have an election coming up in November.

19. The lowest prices are in MO & OH---critical Senate races??
I find it interesting that the prices are lowest in Missouri & Ohio, of all places...I know there's a neck-and-neck race for the Senate in Missouri between McCaskill(D) and Talent(R)...anybody know about Ohio?

14. CNN HLN did a piece on it this AM
Edited on Sun Sep-17-06 05:29 PM by jpak
(local radio station)

They brought up the link between gas prices, Republicans and Big Oil.

One person interviewed claimed it wasn't a coincidence that oil prices were falling before a close election and the Big Oil gives >80% of their campaign contributions to the GOP.

I was shocked!

on edit: I have also seen several LTTE that were highly sceptical about all this too.

It's not just a DU thang...

18. Smirk's approval rating is inversely proportional to gas prices.
Oil execs know who their friends are, and will do whatever necessary to keep them in power. But they could never get away with it if the media acted as if Clinton was president all the time.

21. Big Oil may have achieved it's goal early.
Big oil has been extremely useful to the right's goal of destroying the middle class.

1. Help destroy unions. Expensive gas put the final nail in Ford and GM's coffin. 1000's of union jobs gone forever. Not only at those companies but at their suppliers too.

2. Help destroy benefits. The cost of doing business with such expensive gas means businesses from small to large had no choice but to cut back on benefits to their employees.

All Bushco needed was Big Oil and Big Pharm. Between those 2 industries they had the power to utterly destroy the middle class. If the RNC keeps it's stranglehold on gov't we can expect an all out feeding frenzy in these 2 industries for the next 2 years. IMHO.
