The Pinning Ceremony was Awesome

I placed the Anchor Collar Devices on one of the Navy's newest Chief's last Friday as a couple of tears trickled down my face. And I stood at attention when the announcement was made "would all Chiefs, past and present rise for the reading of the Chief's Petty Officer's Creed." And I even had the opportunity (and pleasure) to participate in some of the pre-pinning training evolutions for the new Chiefs. I got so pumped I'm still way up there somewhere in the stratosphere. I also wore an American Flag Pin on my lapel because I was a proud veteran celebrating the achievements of those still serving today.

Chief, huh? Damn, shoulda known that. Backbone of the Navy. Grounded in reality, keep the enlisties alive, the officers from falling overboard, and able to sort moral dilemmas in a single bound. Yep. Chiefs keep it all running smoothly.

Actually I spent 24 years in the Navy just to pad my resume. And all of the plaques and awards on the walls of my I love Me room are all fake; I put them up to make me feel manly. And I don't wave the flag in WalMart parking lots and I don't have any magnets on my truck (although my Sister in law gave me one that says, Got Freedom? Thank a Vet - its on the fridge in the garage.)

To think I've spent more than 50 years not being a patriotic "conservative." I should be so ashamed.

Since I retired four years ago I haven't been around uniformed folks to any great extent. Being on base for three days was an incredible stroll down memory lane. It made me proud all over again. Listening to those selectees march into the theatre singing Anchors Aweigh as loud as they could pegged my Patriotism meter. Something "they" could not possibly understand. And one of the speakers talked about being prepared to lead and die for the global war on terror. A speech the flag wavers would run and hide from. Yeah, I'm a fucking patriot.

I am as proud of the idea of America today as I was as a young enlistee way back in my day, even though America has changed so much. My journey in the US Navy never took me to a ship but I will always be a Sailor and a proud one at that. One of the highlights of my life now is when I go to see the Doc I get to visit with so many Veterans and we talk, my wife will ask me do you know him/her from somewhere or something and I always say, yes dear, I do. She knows.

teammate to you and your Jarhead Dad. My last deployment was in Saudi about ten years ago. We had about 25,000 Air Force Personnel. But we had a dozen Marines looking out for us. We were in good hands. Knowing what I know now I may have joined the Marines if I were 18 again. They are the epitome of professionalism.

Over 20 years ago now, it was. For me, at age 7 or 8, the weirdest thing was seeing him in khaki instead of blue or white.
