Bush doesn't want to torture, he just wants us talking terror, not Iraq
once again, Bush changed the subject, and may win the midterms. It doesn't matter if he wins the vote in the Senate/House. He doesn't even care. It's politics and we fell for it.

Think about it: there is no reason for him to be pushing this. The only area when he polls over 50% is in his war on terror (not his war in Iraq). So, if he can be talking about the big bad terrorists, it's good for him and bad for us.

1. Actually he does want to torture and he has ordered torture.
And secret trials with secret evidence. He (actually The Cabal) want all of this and more. However your point about changing the debate is correct. They have used this issue to change the debate. That however does not mean that they do not want to abolish the GC, establish secret tribunals, and use torture against detainees. They do and they have and they intend to continue doing so.

3. NO, it is bigger than that
He needs to legalize what he has already done because he knows that he could be charged with war crimes. He also knows that time is running out.
If the elections are fair then there is a good chance the Democrats will gain control and he is done getting his way.
Either way, the world court could come after him and that too is a deadline staring him straight in the face

Talking torture has to be worse for him than Iraq I would think

8. I don't think he thought it would be a problem with his rubber stamp
congress. That is why he hit it now.

4. bush is torturing and has no qualms about it whatsoever.
he just doesn't realize that when our soldiers get captured in another country they could be tortured also, and no one will come to our defense and say you cannot do that according to the Geneva Conventions.

6. He cares, but only to cover his ass.
The key words in Bush's version of the Senate Bill are "retroactive protection of U.S. personnel". Forget about future torture, "someone" authorized torture on these 14 detainees comming to Gitmo. This will come out in the Military Tribunals and "someone" will be guilty of War Crimes.

7. It is all a grand deception, but
Bush also gets his jollies by torturing people. He's a mean, mean man. Not a kind of caring bone in his body. He wants money and power, and will do whatever it takes to get it (or keep it). No matter how much he gets, it will never be enough.

The man is an alcoholic and a drug abuser. He's also addicted to power, and has to keep getting more and more to feed his fix.

The man should not be in office, but instead should be under psychic treatment.

So, if America is thinking about terror instead of the economy, Iraq, dead soldiers, the deficit, or all the other negatives, well, that's OK in George's book.

12. He (and Rove) always bet the trifecta

They are always trying to set up the next play, the next payoff. To get torture, a free ride on criminality, and to swing the election is just another day at the office for them. It is the extreme duplicity (triplicity?) of this misAdministration that has been their hallmark and crowning success. No sane, moral person would even think of trying such outlandish schemes. It's like string theory or quantum mechanics; the man on the street, who cannot fathom how it really works, will accept even the most childish explanations (you're either with us or you support the terrorists).
