At least Democrats tax, spend to help others

Given that I am conservative when it comes to many social issues, I am sometimes asked why I am a Democrat.

While there are many Republican ideas I support and many good people in the GOP, I think Democrats are still the best hope for the average person in America. Contrast the stances of the two parties on many important issues, and I must be a Democrat.

A few years ago, at a family dinner, it was announced that a relative had received a grant from AmeriCorps, former President Bill Clinton's domestic version of the Peace Corps, which was started by another Democrat, John F. Kennedy. AmeriCorps puts college or graduate students to work in some type of community service, allowing them to earn money for school or to pay back qualified student loans.

When I first heard of the program, I thought back to my college days in the early 1980s when student benefits were slashed under a Republican administration. I was one of those casualties so I am very familiar with how supply-side economics "trickles down" to those on the bottom of the economic ladder.
