New Sibel Edmonds movie!
Good News! There's a new documentary about Sibel called "Kill The Messenger"

From the Press Release:
"...the film presents a terrifying picture of Turkish networks’ activities in global nuclear black-market, narcotics and illegal arms trafficking activities in the United States, and examines the extraordinary efforts of officials within the US Government to insure that the secrecy surrounding Edmonds’ case be maintained at any cost – from Edmonds’ termination from the FBI, to invoking the State Secrets Privilege, to gagging the US Congress.

[]

Bill Weaver commented: “H.L. Mencken once said that ‘every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats’. This film makes me want to do just that. The incompetence, maliciousness, corruption, inefficacy, impudence, arrogance, and plain stupidity of the government’s criminal activities toward Sibel Edmonds are a national shame. Having lived under tyranny in Iran and elsewhere, Edmonds knows what it looks like. In her case, and in many other recent cases, tyranny comes in the form of the state secrets privilege, a foolproof mechanism of the federal government to hide executive branch corruption, incompetence, and illegal activity. This is a practice more at home with Czars and nabobs, and should have no place in the United States. But Edmonds gave the government something it never expected – a no holds barred battle. She hoisted the black flag and went on the attack by forming the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition, an organization dedicated to changing the law, exposing government misdeeds, and giving hell to those who richly deserve it. This film will forever change the way you view the United States government and will give you an insight into what true patriotism, not Wal-Mart patriotism, looks like.”

Bad News: I'm not sure when it'll be shown in the US

Good News: The global premiere is on Tuesday Sep 19 on Canal Plus in France and Belgium, and in Australia in October.

Good News: Sibel has set up a site for the film where you can see the trailer, and the brochure etc.

More Good News: the trailer looks great. I also spent four+ hours interviewing the director last week and we had a great discussion. Sibel is posting the summary (about '6 pages') of the interview here - there's another 30 odd 'pages' and I hope to be able to release that in the next little while in dribs and drabs.

From the interview with the film-maker:
Luke: Ok - How about you give a synopsis of the movie to kick us off.

Mathieu Verboud: First of all let's start with what we wanted to achieve in this film. We were interested in the phenomenon of whistleblowers - the whole concept of whistleblowing was not a big thing here in France. We don’t know nor understand the concept

So I looked into major cases of whistleblowing in the US and I came across the whistleblowing cases in the FBI and I got interested in Sibel's case particularly because, you know, people told me that she is incredible. So at the beginning, all we knew at the beginning was that she had a secret - that she was willing to fight, and that she had a secret. And I had no goddamn idea what the secret was about. No idea.

We knew nothing about the whole thing in the beginning - and Sibel made it perfectly clear in the beginning that she would not disclose anything to us - nor to anyone else. So we had a big interview in the beginning in April 2005 after she lost in the DC Circuit Court. A 2 hour interview in her house - it was very tense, very sharp - and she described the whole thing, the case in general, the Dickersons etc, etc - without making any mention of the specifics of the secret itself.

But at the same time, we decided that it would also be very interesting to find out what it is that she couldn't tell - like you and many others do. So we started the investigation on our own - the idea was to tell two stories unfolding at the same time; Sibel's journey with the government, and at the same time trying to look into the secret.

So the film is divided this way - the first act of the film is about what happened to Sibel, who she is, and what she worked on. So for example in the first act there is no mention whatsoever of the American Turkish Council. We just know that she's been attacked by vicious people in the government, and that there's a very shady spy case. In the second act of the film, Sibel counter-attacks - she creates the whistleblower coalition, she goes on appeal, and then we come across David Rose, the investigative journalist for Vanity Fair and we come across the notion of the American Turkish Council - the ATC.

At that time, we knew that the whole Sibel Edmonds case is closely linked to Turkey and the ATC whom we now know is closely linked to the MIC, the Military Industrial Complex, and it's very highly connected to arms trafficking.

And then in the last chapter of the film, the last 25 minutes, we go into the secret and explore the links between Turkey, the US, Israel, Pakistan; possible links to Islamic groups; the role of Turkish Generals, and the role of neoconservatives. We also focus on the Plame case - and how that all connects to Sibel.

More Good News: I've also set up a blog to discuss the film. http://sibeledmonds.blogspot.com/ - I've added some other stuff there which will hopefully bring the story together.

Bad guys in the film: Richard Perle, Doug Feith, Dennis Hastert, Marc Grossman, Osama and others.

Interviewees: David Rose (who wrote the Sibel article for Vanity Fair), Joe Wilson, Philip Giraldi, David Albright, Joe Trento, John Cole and a bunch of others, including Marc Grossman (who doesn't appear on the french version of the film - but there's a funny anecdote in my interview with Verboud interview about his interview where Grossman pretends he's never heard of Plame or Sibel - in April 2006!)

From the film brochure (pdf):
Out of love for her newly-adopted country, Sibel Edmonds agreed to join the FBI as a translator in the wake of 9/11. But her world gets turned upside-down when Sibel reports wrongdoings to her supervisors: one of her colleagues from the Translation Unit is secretly working for the same Turkish officials who are “targetted” by the top-secret FBI investigations that Sibel is working on. As a “reward” for her whistle-blowing, Sibel is fired from the FBI. Today, she is fighting for the very ideals that American democracy relies on, and is facing, against overwhelming odds, some of the most reckless and powerful officials in the U.S. government.

Sibel has granted a film crew full and exclusive access to document her story, and her struggle, as we zero in on her “secret”. KILL THE MESSENGER (UNE FEMME A ABATTRE) is a true spy story about the only American citizen who dared stand up to the FBI in an attempt to expose the truth on some specific yet hidden aspects of today’s War on Terror and give the American people the protection and security the U.S. government has failed to provide.

(there's more in the brochure (pdf))

7. Here Is One of The Money Quotes from The Interview
"Most observers presume he (Grossman) was on Sibel’s wiretaps, possibly tipping Turkish friends about let’s say the risk posed by Brewster Jennings‘s activities"

It has been established that Hastert was not on any wiretap- why would he be? Sibel translated Turkish tapes only.

But my guess is that Grossman DOES speak Turkish. And if he does, Sibel may have DIRECT evidence against Grossman.

What do you think?

i'm not exactly sure how the recording/translation works - i wouldnt be surprised if some conversations were a combination of english and, say, turkish - in which case Sibel may have heard some english as well.

Having said that Sibel has previously said that you can take a pretty good guess at who she was listening to if you know who speaks her languages (combined with where they have worked) - two others also come to mind - Larry and Franklin and Harry Rhode both speak Farsi.

(I don't know what languages Grossman speaks)

That translators hear a combination.

Resolved: Grossman's voice was on those tapes.

Unresolved: Did Perle, Feith or Hastert appear on the tapes? (Hastert, probably not according to VF).

12. WHAT?! Who does Grossman think he's kidding?
Grossman is dirty, not just where Plame is concerned, but also 9/11:

Marc Grossman actively participated in the following events:
September 4-11, 2001: ISI Director Visits Washington for Mysterious Meetings

ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed visits Washington for the second time. On September 10, a Pakistani newspaper reports on his trip so far. It says his visit has “triggered speculation about the agenda of his mysterious meetings at the Pentagon and National Security Council” as well as meetings with CIA Director Tenet, unspecified officials at the White House and the Pentagon, and his “most important meeting” with Marc Grossman, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. The article suggests, “(O)f course, Osama bin Laden” could be the focus of some discussions. Prophetically, the article adds, “What added interest to his visit is the history of such visits. Last time (his) predecessor was (in Washington), the domestic (Pakistani) politics turned topsy-turvy within days.” (News (Islamabad), 9/10/2001) This is a reference to the Musharraf coup just after an ISI Director’s visit on October 12, 1999 (see October 12, 1999).

For those unfamiliar with ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed's role in the 9/11 attacks, read this link:

October 7, 2001: ISI Director Replaced at US Urging; Role in Funding 9/11 Plot Is One Explanation

ISI Director Lt. Gen. Mahmood Ahmed is replaced in the face of US pressure after links are discovered between him, Saeed Sheikh, and the funding of the 9/11 attacks. Mahmood instructed Saeed to transfer $100,000 into hijacker Mohamed Atta’s bank account prior to 9/11. This is according to Indian intelligence, which claims the FBI has privately confirmed the story. The story is not widely reported in Western countries, though it makes the Wall Street Journal. It is reported in Pakistan as well. The Northern Alliance also repeats the claim in late October. In Western countries, the usual explanation is that Mahmood is fired for being too close to the Taliban. The Times of India reports that Indian intelligence helped the FBI discover the link, and says, “A direct link between the ISI and the WTC attack could have enormous repercussions. The US cannot but suspect whether or not there were other senior Pakistani Army commanders who were in the know of things. Evidence of a larger conspiracy could shake US confidence in Pakistan’s ability to participate in the anti-terrorism coalition.” There is evidence some ISI officers may have known of a plan to destroy the WTC as early as July 1999. Two other ISI leaders, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Aziz Khan and Lt. Gen. Muzaffar Usmani, are sidelined on the same day as Mahmood. Saeed had been working under Khan. The firings are said to have purged the ISI of its fundamentalists. However, according to one diplomat, “To remove the top two or three doesn’t matter at all. The philosophy remains. ... a parallel government of its own. If you go through the officer list, almost all of the ISI regulars would say, of the Taliban, ‘They are my boys.’” It is believed Mahmood has been living under virtual house arrest in Pakistan (which would seem to imply more than just a difference of opinion over the Taliban), but no charges have been brought against him, and there is no evidence the US has asked to question him. He also has refused to speak to reporters since being fired , and outside India and Pakistan, the story has only been mentioned infrequently in the media since. He will reemerge as a businessman in 2003, but still will not speak to the media (see July 2003).

14. grossman in the thick of it
this from the interview with the director:
"Knowing the players in the game, and knowing the business that they engage in, and this being a small world, and Grossman having worked in Turkey and Pakistan, he’d met with ISI chief (Pakistani intelligence agency) on a much-hyped but yet mysterious meeting on September 11, at the time of the attacks, he is a pillar of the ATC, etc, one could assume that Marc Grossman would not be far away from those dealings - legal or illegal, it doesn’t matter. Most observers presume he was on Sibel’s wiretaps, possibly tipping Turkish friends about let’s say the risk posed by Brewster Jennings‘s activities."

http://justacitizen.com/KillTheMessenger/An%20Exclusive%20Interview%20with%20the%20Directors.htm

15. Unfortunately, Grossman's Name is Not As well Known
...as Perle and Feith's. Otherwise he would be in the final cut of the film. But it seems to me he is the "point man" on a lot of corrupt activities involving Turkey.

On Al Franken today, Grossman was actually praised! Someone needs to call Al and tell him Grossman is suspected of passing classified info- sensitive info- to Turkey. Info which could have been passed to al Qaeda, China...you name it.

34. grossman & 911
Here's another one re grossman from a conversation I had with sibel a while back:
Thirdly, two weeks after 911, Sibel overheard two 'targets' of a Counter-Intelligence monitoring program having a conversation. Apparently, three associates of these targets were arrested in New Jersey immediately after 911 - two Turkish guys and an Uzbeki. The targets were desperate to get their associates out of jail, and out of the country, so they called Marc Grossman who duly facilitated their release.

35. Help spread the news from dkos - rate youtube
this from dkos http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2006/9/18/14445/8111/24#c24
Help spread the news...

1st. Watch the youtube vid. here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10Jn4vTGb_8&eurl=
2nd. Rate the video with 5 stars.
3rd. Add to your favorites.
4th. Make a comment.

Everytime you do one of these, it helps more youtube viewers to find this video.

Youtube has a "Top List" of most viewed, most ranked, most commented, and most favorited. Sorry if that isn't proper English.

So if 20 people put this in their favorites, it's likely to make the top list, which will cause random people to go see what all the commotion is about.

Rigth now, 4 people have put this vid in their favorites. It is currently only 54th on the top list for the day. If we can get that up to 20, we'd probably be in the top 10.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're interested in this case, this is the least you can do.

45. This must be aired on the internet.
We knew it! This is infuriating. What they have suppressed.

Getting this film on the internet is the only way we're going to get it out to the public in a timely fashion.

50. Can you help us host house parties in Australia Luke?
Wouldn't get out to as many voters as we'd like, but the sooner at least a bunch of us as a nucleus have seen what this film has to offer, we can at least talk about it more here in the U.S. to hopefully offer timely things for voters to consider in November.

Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 03:09 PM by calipendence
I'd be willing to help try and set up a house party in TJ around here if that's possible.

Don't know if the same stumbling blocks that exist for the U.S. distribution that exists for Canada or Mexico, but if not, that might be another avenue to try.

If you get rights in Canada, a company that might be worth working with is Good Company Communications ( http://www.hellocoolworld.com/ ) which has helped set up house parties and promotions for a number of Canadian progressive films ala Robert Greenwald's style such as "The Corporation", "The Take", "Scared Sacred", etc. Perhaps they could help with this one too.

I wrote some emails a bit ago to Link TV and Free Speech TV asking for them to come calling to try and bargain for rights to air this film too. Perhaps if enough of us do so, they might put up a good price for it to them.

53. why indeed!
perhaps the answer might lie somewhere in this comment:
"Giraldi of course touches on Perle and Feith’s connections with Israel and Turkey, with Israeli and U.S defense contractors, always playing both sides of the fence."
http://justacitizen.com/KillTheMessenger/An%20Exclusive%20Interview%20with%20the%20Directors.htm

Mind you, Feith and Perle are now supplying Chechen guerillas with weapons - essentially giving them to Al Qaeda:
"In the film we expanded on those notions with ex-CIA officer Philip Giraldi who wrote a very interesting article about Sibel Edmonds. He also states that Douglas Feith and Richard Perle may have helped, or have been instrumental in establishing false end-user-certificates that enabled some people to send weapons to the Chechnya guerillas - most of them, or at least some of them being very closely linked to Al Qaeda. "

66. I don't understand...does this include all the material for which Sibel is
gagged? Is she risking arrest? Is the sensitive material gleaned from other sources, thereby not putting Sibel at risk? The last paragraph says they "zero in on her secret." Do they talk about her story (good) without revealing secrets?

I've understood that the most sensitive material is not FBI mismanagement, but things she overheard while translating...things that would shed light on 9/11 and put elected officials behind bars.

We need to stop dancing around this all-important information and get to the bottom of it. She needs a champion (Conyers, Kennedy, Boxer, Feingold?) to give the information to and they can expose it.

Huge Sibel fan here....

And regarding the other posts referring to Indira Singh and Ptech....worth a read in the Sibel DU group for those unfamiliar.

69. David Rose
David Rose wrote an article for Vanity Fair in aug last year http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article9774.htm

- he was a key source for the movie (the english accent in the trailer) - then the directors went and found others to substantiate and explain - e.g. Philip Giraldi (ex-cia) who has worked in Turkey, and also written about Sibel's case etc

it's not so much about 911. if yuo read this article by giraldi http://wotisitgood4.blogspot.com/2006/05/sibel-giraldi-american-conservative.html
Sibel says that gets to the core of the issue

76. Perhaps the full version DOES break the rules?...
I understand that we are waiting in the U.S. for the "full version" of the film that sounds like it has more stuff in it than what's being shown now in France, etc. Perhaps the idea is that:

1) If she tries to release it now in the "full version" form, where she could be arrested, she'd have to leave the country, and perhaps forever if the Republicans stay in power in November's elections.

2) Perhaps if she sees the Democrats win in November, she'll feel safe enough to stay here with the "rules being broken" in the final version of the film being released here, that she might not feel otherwise if the Republicans were to stay in power in congress.

3) If the Republicans win back in congress, she then might have the choice of leaving the country then and releasing the full version in 2007, or them scaling back what ultimately gets released in 2007 so she doesn't get arrested.

Maybe this is a good sign that something will come through that we need that wouldn't otherwise come through if the Dems win in November.

Then again, another part of me wonders if they aren't making ANY release plans public here in the states until the absolute last minute and then do a release on the last week or so before the election with some entity like Link TV or the like to avoid the Republicans being forewarned about it and having more time to shut it down legally before they could get it out. Kind of a "surprise attack" so to speak.

Hoping that one of these scenarios happen in a positive way.
