Juan Cole made a series of very enlightening posts on this subject a few months ago, which many would do well to read.

Here are some selections:

Quran 5:69 says (Arberry): "Surely they that believe, and those of Jewry, and the Christians, and those Sabeaans, whoso believes in God and the Last Day, and works righteousness--their wage waits them with their Lord, and no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow."

5:82. " . . . and you will find the nearest in love to the believers (Muslims) those who say: 'We are Christians.' That is because amongst them are priests and monks, and they are not proud."

25:63: The worshippers of the All-Merciful are they who tread gently upon the earth, and when the ignorant address them, they reply, "Peace!"

Quran 4:94: . . . Do not say to one who offers you peace, "You are not a believer," seeking the spoils of this life. For God has abundant treasure. You used to be like them, after all, and then God blessed you.

The constant drumbeat of hatred toward Muslims and Arabs on the American Right, on television and radio and in the press, has gradually had its effect. This according to a Washington Post poll. Even in the year after September 11, a majority of Americans respected Islam and Muslims, but powerful forces in US society are determined to change that, and are gradually succeeding. As they win, Bin Laden also wins, since his whole enterprise was to "sharpen the contradictions" and provoke a clash of civilizations.

Some 25% of Americans now say they personally are prejudiced against Muslims. And 33% think that Islam as a religion helps incite violence against non-Muslims, up from 14% after September 11.

The Bush administration policy is to continually insinuate that the Muslim world is the new Soviet Union and full of sinister forces that require the US to go to war against them. But at the same time, America has warm relations with Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, etc., etc. When Saudi Arabia's then crown prince (now king) Abdullah came to the US, Bush brought him to the Crawford ranch, held hands with him and kissed him on each cheek.

This two-faced policy and self-contradictory rhetoric has contributed to growing hatred and bigotry toward Muslims in the US, which is no less worrisome than the hatred Jews faced in Europe in the 1920s. It is dangerous because of what it can become.

All human beings are the same. They all have the same emotions. All laugh when happy and weep when sad. There are no broad civilizations that produce radically different behavior in human beings. All are capable of violence. (Christians killed tens of millions in the course of the 20th century, far, far more than did Muslims). Few commit much violence except in war. You can walk around any place in Cairo at 1 am perfectly safely, but cannot do that everywhere safely in many major US cities, including the nation's capital, Washington, DC. Even the idea of Islam as a cultural world or civilization opposed to the Christian West is a false construct. Eastern Mediterranean honor cultures (Greece, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Syria) have more in common with each other across the Christian-Muslim divide than either has in common with Britain or the US. And, Muslim states don't make their alliances by religion. Egypt was allied with the Soviet Union in the 1960s, then switched to the US in the 1970s and until the present. Four of the five non-NATO allies of the US are Muslim countries. Turkey is even a full NATO ally and fought along side the US in the Korean War.

2. I disagree w/Mr. Cole. First of all, he completely ignores the reason

why CERTAIN RWingers stir up hatred towards Muslims; namely, because they need a plausible excuse to justify illegal invasions to steal oil and enjoy all of the other money-related spoils which are there for the taking as part, parcel, and the result of such actions.

Second, the fact that someone might well be able to walk around Cairo safely at 1 a.m. has more to do with the barbaric punishments meted out to offenders of Sharia than anything else. Egyptians and other Arab cultures are just as likely to commit crimes as anyone else on planet Earth under the same or similar circumstances - and if they believe that they won't get caught or have to pay a high price (loss of a limb e.g.) if they DO get caught.

15. Whatever it has to do with...

...after spending almost a month in Cairo, I can honestly say I have never been to a city where I felt more welcomed and safe, and I am a US citizen who grew up in San Francisco.

It is not just the punishment - the police/military presence is very strong - it is also part of the culture of a city that has occupied one of the great crossroads of civilization for many centuries.

I saw no "clash of religions" even though there are more mosques, synagogues, and churches than I have ever seen in such a small area. Calls to prayer are as ubiquitous as church bells. There is both tremendous poverty and wealth, many times within blocks of each other. There is also the nonstop madhouse traffic, the result of almost 20 million people in such a small area.

The government on all levels is completely corrupt, with open bribery the normal course of doing business. But through it all is one of the most charming, crazy, sophisticated, devout, cultures I have ever had the pleasure to experience. It was both astonishing and life affirming. I will be forever changed by the whole experience.

I fell in love with this city, the ancient gateway to enchanting Egypt.

28. There's another way of looking at it too.

Cultures react in different ways to different things. Yes, some muslims in some far-flung countries protest when their religion is defamed. But are they a threat to us? No, not really.

Are we a threat to them? Probably more so if you consider that coalition forces (i.e. US, UK etc) conspired to invade a sovereign country on false pretences killing approx 50,000 civilians. In the grand scheme of things that is a much worse crime than burning effigies. I don't condone the violence, particularly the nun who they say was killed because of the Pope's comments BUT we have rained down much more destruction on muslims than they ever did towards us.

I have to say what is the truth. Unfortunately, I don't have a link, but I will find one, if no one is familiar with this. The missing one, Osama Bin Laden, has stated very clearly his goal is to kill all non-believers. For the atheist out there, he is not as kind to you as you are to him. That being said. It's all very well pointing out that the USA is allied with a lot of majority Muslim countries, but it's not allied to their people. I daresay a plebiscite on alliance with the USA in two-thirds of the states mentioned would produce a strongly negative result. I'm surprised at Juan Cole for conflating Muslim governments with their peoples in that way, I expected him to know better.

The problem IS these alliances, in several cases - the USA is supporting repressive regimes that are happy to harbour very violent extremists because extremist Islam provides a vent for their people. This way these unpleasant regimes turn the frustrations of their people into anger at the outside world in general, and the West in particular, thus drawing attention away from thi own horrible failing.

To make broad-brush statements like "Few commit much violence except in war" proves nothing - the same could be said of the citizenry of any state or religion in the world.

As with the Old and New Testaments - which Muslims also revere - selective quoting of Koran passages proves nothing. The Beatitudes do not "prove" Christianity is peaceful.

And the phrase "honour culture" gives me chills.

I wonder what Cole hopes to achieve with this hash of platitudes. Yes, Bush is inciting hatred of Muslims as well as Mulsim hatred, but while there is not a "clash of civilisations" I think that there is a very real and important conflict between Enlightment virtues of tolerance - that is, classical Liberalism - with religious extremism on a global level. Pap like this does not advance the argument, it just strives to conceal it.

Selective quotes do not "prove" that "Enlightenment virtues of tolerance" are in conflict with religion, or are on display here for that matter, nor at the White House.

You're seeking a perfect philosophy that has never been twisted to justify violence and other typical human behavior. Either that or you're singling out Muslims (or religious people in general).

The people cried out for mercy, but Allah killed them anyway. 15

Allah gave judgment and knowledge to Lot . He was a righteous man. (Genesis 19:7-38) 75

Surah 22: The Pilgrimage

Disbelievers will wear garments of fire, boiling fluid will be poured on their heads, their bellies and skin will be melted, they will be tormented with iron hooks, and when they try to escape they will be driven back with the taunt: Taste the doom of burning. 19-22
