Where does Obama say "Democrats need to be tougher on natl security"?

One of the big discussions today concerns something that Barack Obama allegedly said at Sen.Harkin's steak fry. This is the first paragraph of the AP story whose headline is "Obama warns Democrats: Get tougher on security":

INDIANOLA, Iowa — Illinois Sen. Barack Obama warned thousands of Democratic activists Sunday that the party must have a tougher stance on national security if it wants to succeed in the November elections.

Sounds annoying, doesn't it? Here's one of our own, almost confirming GOP talking points. But wait, hold on -- the following is the only quote included in the article used to back up the reporter's paraphrasing of what Obama allegedly said:

"What Democrats have to do is to close the deal," said Obama, the keynote speaker at Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin's 29th annual steak fry. "We have got to show we have a serious agenda for change."

Does that quote resemble what the intro paragraph said? It didn't at all. In fact, none of the articles concerning Obama's appearance at the steak-fry that I located on Google news search mentioned any other quote on the subject of "Democrats" and "national security", other than Obama's contention that Democrats shouldn't use the fear of terrorism to gain political points the way that Bush does.

Is there a transcript of Obama's speech? Is there anything else in the transcript that supports the headline of this article? Or did some AP writer and/or editor put one over on the public?

to the cnn rumors today that he's running for Prez in 08

gist of the rumor-
his actions are actions of someone that is considering a presidential run

so the republicans just attack without thinking. Its like a snapping turtle still a danger of biting even when its head is cut off:-)

I watched the speech, then I watched it again after I read the thread in LBN. He says nothing like that. It was a wonderful progressive speech. I have been looking for a transcript too.

I think that there are people who fear Obama, and are behind articles like this intended to get the base to dislike him. Just my .02 cents.

6. The way it's written you don't know for sure if it was in the speech or

behind the scenes quotes to the reporter.

On edit: One of the reasons I think it sounds like it could be an accurate quote, no matter how poorly the article is written overall, is that Obama has made comments similar in the past where he implies that the GOP spin against Dems is an accepted point, instead of fighting the spin and backing up the Dem actions being maligned.

9. The story stongly implies that it was in the speech

This is the second time that an article has come out and attributed statements to Obama in a speech that he did not say. The last time was a couple of months ago and it had to do with religion.

8. Please understand this......Obama did not just give a speech on

Sunday...he also granted interviews with the media. So what is being reported isn't necessarily what he said in the speech....but more likely what he answered when asked a question by the press.

An article said this....In a frenetic question-and-answer session in front of dozens of camera crews before his speech, Mr. Obama got nearly a dozen questions about the presidential campaign and only one about national security......

Maybe that was how he answered the one national security question posed. :shrug:

Oh....I get it! Alex Trebek? (I'm kinda of smart...but that one took a while to dawn on me...and I consider myself quite swift!)

But I'm kind of confused as to your statement still. Unless Obama denies that he said this, than he said it; not in his speech, but in talking to reporters.
