Keith Olbermann - TONIGHT: Bush Owes Country An Apology
Edited on Mon Sep-18-06 06:33 PM by kpete
Sept. 18, 2006 | 5:08 p.m. ET

Tonight's special comment

Tune in to "Countdown" at 8 p.m. ET for another special comment from Keith Olbermann. Here's a preview:

The President of the United States owes this country an apology.

It will not be offered, of course.

He does not realize its necessity.

There are now none around him who would tell him - or could.

The last of them, it appears, was the very man whose letter provoked the President into the conduct, for which the apology is essential.

An apology is this President's only hope of regaining the slightest measure of confidence, of what has been, for nearly two years, a clear majority of his people.

84. God bless your crusade against unnecessary and erroneous apostrophes!
I know that the abominable practice goes on everywhere, but it seems especially prevalent here in Georgia, where I have repeatedly seen large, silk-screened signs in front of businesses advertising "GIFT'S", "TOY'S", "BOX'S" and so on. A local car dealership recently undertook what was easily a million-dollar renovation, and celebrated their grand opening by lining the street with numerous custom-made signs proclaiming themselves "ATHEN'S ONLY FORD DEALERSHIP". But my favorite are 'schools' that advertise for "teacher's" in the Journal-Constitution want ads. Zang. And, by the way, Bush sucks.

10. Fuck apologies, i'm for a hanging
I don't take treason in terms of apology. The man has deliberately betrayed the people in going to war,
in putting us all in danger and in debt for ideological puritainism, and its treasonous what these
repuglicans have been up to, treasonous. I'm for a group trial, and a group hanging, with modern
electronics, surely the trapdoors of all the leadership can be timed to drop at precisely the
same time, that the world have a time when it can breathe a sigh of relief.

War crimes is heavy shit, and i'm for a hanging, i likely will be until i'm long gone. Were there justice, it is
the thing that should find every one of these aggressive war criminals and torturers. Society can't tolerate that
kind of stuff, it makes us all very sick to be a society, peverted our selves for consuming that perversion in our
apparent civility. No, i'm not for an apology, Keith, i'm for a trial.

11. Apologize?!
We demand an apology... as though that in itself will make everything all right and make the apologizer worthy of forgiveness and good faith.

To hell with apologies! I don't care if he's sorry. I only care whether or not he intends to commit further outrages, if he's going to fix what he's broken, if he admits his wrongdoing without equivocation, if he takes steps towards reparations.

Apologies are for hurt feelings, not CRIMES. Not TREASON.

He owes us a resignation, signing over all his ill-gotten riches to the Treasury, and his truthful testimony about everything he & his cabal has done. He can keep his fake apologies!

That being said, I don't know what KO's referring to... what letter? which conduct?

I guess I'll watch the commentary :)

49. Straw Man!
"Mr. President, former Secretary of State Colin Powell says the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism," he was asked by a reporter. "If a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and former secretary of state feels this way, don't you think that Americans and the rest of the world are beginning to wonder whether you're following a flawed strategy?"

“If there's any comparison between the compassion and decency of the American people and the terrorist tactics of extremists, it's flawed logic,” Bush said. “It's just -- I simply can't accept that. It's unacceptable to think that there's any kind of comparison between the behavior of the United States of America and the action of Islamic extremists who kill innocent women and children to achieve an objective.

Huh? Who said anything about a comparison?
http://mediamatters.org/items/200609170002
http://news.bostonherald.com/editorial/view.bg?articleid=158059&srvc=home

Of course Keith Olbermann is very correct to criticize Bush's suggestion that certain thoughts are unacceptable. (I was sure he was going to mention "thoughtcrime".) But another very important point is that Bush seemed to imagine an argument that wasn't even there. It was an outrageous straw man if deliberate, and a frightening mental lapse if it wasn't.

86. Indeed...
So, the U.S. can commit atrocities, just as long as they aren't as bad as the enemy's?

Plus, *'s answer completely missed the question, which was about his anti-terrorism strategy, but he went on about the "compassion and decency of the American people." It wasn't the "compassionate, decent American people" who created the flawed strategy, it was yours, Smirko.

Glad to have you here. You're correct, of course. Bush is so out of it and his mind is so degraded that he tries to fit square responses into round questions. He has these little memorized phrases (which have been drilled into him by staffers) but he has no idea where and when to use them. He just spits them out there and hopes that they fit with the question.

53. He owes much more than an apology
this man has destroyed this great nation, stole two elections, allowed 911 to happen, invaded two countries for no f*cking reason, gave billions from our Treasury to corporate mobsters, sent 3,000 American troops to their deaths for no f*cking reason, tortured, raped and butchered foreigners in their own land, now wants to legalize all these heinous crimes retroactively and Olbermann says he only owes us an APOLOGY???

The type of punishment for Bush after he's convicted in a court of law (I'm giving him more than he's willing to give others) is something I can't even begin to imagine.

While the rest of what you're listing is pretty much spot-on, I only know of one country he invaded for no reason and that's Iraq. Of course it's late, and I could be missing the obvious...

59. even though
the reason given to invade Afghanistan was to capture Osama Bin Laden, Bush never intended to capture him, as we now know.

The real reason was to destroy the Taliban, which prohibited the oil pipeline across the country to be built. Bush, Cheney and his corporate mobsters needed that pipeline.

60. yes,it's insane isn't it?
But it is the culmination of all those things that led us to this point.By calling Mr.Bush to the mat he isn't allowing him to get away with it.An apology won't be given nor was it the purpose of Olbermanns commentary. It was to give perspective and in my humble opinion he did a magnificent job at it.

Hopefully soon there will be impeachment hearings on his true crimes.

66. Perhaps if we use his methods he'll confess.
That evidence would be valid at trial, right? Or we could declare him an enemy combatant and not bother with a trial. George has set many valuable precedents with which to deal with his treasonous malfeasance.

It wouldn't be fun, but it would reek of justice. Do it at Guantanamo and let 'em watch.

Yeah sad isn't it CBS News Ed Murrow - Douglas Edwards - Walter Cronkite - Dan Rather - Katie Couric? Which one is NOT like the others. Now if that last one were Linda Ellerbee or Christiane Amanpour I'd say great but Katie Couric PLEASE.

"We deal in illusions, man. None of it is true. But you people sit there day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds. We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the tube is reality and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you. You dress like the tube. You eat like the tube. You even think like the tube. In God's name, you people are the real thing, WE are the illusion." Howard Beale

Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 05:05 AM by nuton2wheels
Hate to say it, but we've only gotten WORSE since Nam in my opinion. More of a focus on greed, corporate dominance, and seizure of constitutional rights... Bill Clinton got a blow job and was impeached... Dubya sent over 2,000 US servicemen and women to their deaths in Iraq (not to discount the sacrifices of our foreign allies and the Iraqi people) for a war whose declared cause was later found to be a shady fabrication, yet who question his leadership since? This country's going to hell in a handbasket thanks to a pseudo-religious, coked up, alcoholic cowboy wannabe fratboy whose rich daddy bailed him out of previous failed endeavors.

107. Thanks! Here's my new user introduction...
I used to be a die hard republican, or so I thought... My background was conducive to it, anyway. Spent my childhood in a hick town with ultra-conservative parents... Went to college at Virginia Tech in the heart of KKK country... Moved to Dallas, TX and after 3 weeks, got so fed up with the arrogant Baptist pricks and their big SUVs, a pervasive indifferent stance toward the environment, statewide favoritism toward corporations and corruption, and the Bush fanatics that I finally saw the light. I mean, I'd been surrounded by the stink of Republicanism and their terrible policies my entire life, but it took moving to Dallas, TX to REALLY notice it. At that point, I took a big step towards the "radical" left and now consider myself a socialist. No offense to those of you who aren't, but a lot of Democrats seem to be in the pockets of corporations (namely former VA governor Mark Warner...) and others just seem to bolster the party regardless of who the candidate is. I hope that at some point we can turn this country around for the better and reverse all the damage dubya has done... I still can't believe that Pervert O'Reilly's show is rated #1 or something and people actually watch FNC despite their spinning and deception. I'm slowly starting to realize that one person can make a difference, but many working together is better. :)

82. Think and vote
Think about the coalition of thinking countries which disagree with the current foreign policy of the U.S.

Think about the governmant lies in Hungary.

Think about the purpose of democracy.

Think and keep thinking.

There are other ways of finding the news other than the sad t.v. news which is now 30% sports - 30% weather/traffic and 30% entertainment. Think where is the news.

Think about the consequences of not thinking.

The currently appointed leader consistently says what he means, of course, while pointing the finger at the other. What he does is consistently unaccapteble.

In my humble opinion the answer for him is not apology but impeachment. I am sure he finds the concept an unthinkable.

he seems to think there's a point to pleading, reasoning with the abuser. This is characteristic of the battered wife syndrome.

If the sociopaths in the WH would ever apologize, they'd subsequently continue doing what they've been doing all this time. "You wanted an apology? You got your apology. Now stop whining."

Keiths commentary abrubtly Says NO to the insanity,WRONG!And "wakes" people up to what is actually happening and reminds them what America is and what we stand for.

So yes, unfortunately some people do need reminding.

But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be on TV saying what he's saying. He energizes those who watch him, many of whom will verbally convey some of his message to the zombies.

As I said earlier, The American public needed to hear Edward R. Murrow slam McCarthy and it needs to hear Keith Olbermann slam Bush. Even if some don't hear it directly, some will through others that did, and it still needs to be done to counter all the other lying crap on the tube.
