Article 3

In the case of armed conflict not of an international character occurring in the territory of one of the High Contracting Parties, each party to the conflict shall be bound to apply, as a minimum, the following provisions:

1. Persons taking no active part in the hostilities, including members of armed forces who have laid down their arms and those placed hors de combat by sickness, wounds, detention, or any other cause, shall in all circumstances be treated humanely, without any adverse distinction founded on race, colour, religion or faith, sex, birth or wealth, or any other similar criteria.

To this end the following acts are and shall remain prohibited at any time and in any place whatsoever with respect to the above-mentioned persons:

(a) Violence to life and person, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture;

(b) Taking of hostages;

(c) Outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment;

(d) The passing of sentences and the carrying out of executions without previous judgment pronounced by a regularly constituted court affording all the judicial guarantees which are recognized as indispensable by civilized peoples.

2. The wounded and sick shall be collected and cared for.

An impartial humanitarian body, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, may offer its services to the Parties to the conflict.

The Parties to the conflict should further endeavour to bring into force, by means of special agreements, all or part of the other provisions of the present Convention.

The application of the preceding provisions shall not affect the legal status of the Parties to the conflict.

2. There is nothing vague in there. It is in fact crystal clear.
I'll bet most third graders would understand it completely.

3. No but seriously we need a translation for our current Potus.
A Special addendum for the 43rd President of the United States explaining torture, human dignity, and specifically stating...no water-boarding, no electrocution, no beatings,no naked human pyramids....etc...etc...etc...

Then after this clown leaves office whichever way that may be, a constitutional amendment requiring all future presidents abide by the law, provide a "sworn under oath" state of the union address, and pass a basic mental competence exam.

7. I have a question.

I'm a little embarrassed to be asking this because I feel that I should already know the answer, but what makes Shrub believe that he has the authority to re-write an article of the Geneva Conventions anyway? I know that he believes it, but why isn't the international community jumping in over this? Last time I checked, GWB wasn't King of the World, despite what he believes in his own tiny mind.

8. The Senate ratifies treaties
As a sovereign nation we do have the right to alter, pull out of, or never ratify in the first place, any international treaty.

Of course there is a political price for this.

We did after all strong arm many nations into signing this one in the first place.

9. Exactly, that's what I was thinking.

The Geneva Conventions aren't just about the USA. It's worrying to think that the USA can, by itself, arbitrarily change the meaning without some kind of consensus of the other nations. I must have been asleep in history class when we studied this.

Edited for grammar
