Bush's UN speech is all about domestic politics

George W. Bush does not care whether the UN General Assembly recieves his speech well today.

Indeed, in Bush's mind the best thing that could happen would be for him to get a "cool" reception at the UN--especially if his counterpart from Iran sets them on fire.

It's all about the base.

Bush will speak in high minded tones about Democracy and Freedom.

The same clips will be played and replayed. Commentators will blather back and forth. 60% or more of the American People will dismiss his speech as lies & more lies. They don't matter.

It's all about the base.

It's about the conservative voters who have begun to have doubts. Bush is speaking to them and to no one else. It's all about the base.

If he wants to go to war with Iran, the UN can do nothing to stop him. They don't matter either.

The only thing that could stop him would be a Democratic majority in either house. That's what this speech is all about. That's what raising the spectre of a battle of civilizations is about.

The majority of the American people may hate Bush with a fiery passion but he does not care. If those who are not totally committed to fighting him can be persuaded not to vote in November or to register meaningless protest votes then he will have what he wants.

It's all about the base.

2. I disagree. We are going to bomb Iran.

This air strike has been in the works for a while now. Bushco is not going to let a little thing like reality interfere with their grand ideologies. While you are correct that this speech will strengthen his fanatical base, its purpose is to further lay the groundwork for a bombing of Iran. Bush is going to demand that Iran cease its alleged nuclear weapon program (or allow inspectors), and he is going to demand that the UN hold Iran accountible. In other words, see Iraq.

3. I think so too. Just like Iraq. But elections have to come first.

Bush won't make his intentions regarding Iran clear until after the Congressional elections just as he did in Iraq.

What is truly frustrating is that this bastard is doing the exact same thing and that no one seems to believe he'd actually do it.

I see a repeat of Iraq only now our military is depleted and we are going up against a country that has not been weakened by years of sanctions.

This is madness.

Bush and his henchmen may think so, but Iran is no Iraq. Look how much the Iraq excursion has cost in blood and treasure, and they didn't even resist.
Iran is actually militarized, a lot bigger and a helluva lot angrier.

Bush should really stop poking other beings with sticks...sometimes they bite back, hard.
