McLEAN -- Republican Sen. George Allen branded Democratic challenger Jim Webb a single-issue candidate yesterday over Webb's opposition to the Iraq war and its central place in his Senate bid.
"This is the one issue that drives my op- ponent's campaign," contended Allen, forced to defend the divisive war again in a Senate debate, as was the case a day earlier when the candidates clashed on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Webb, a former secretary of the Navy, did not back off from the Iraq issue during the freewheeling debate sponsored by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce.
Polls show more than two-thirds of Americans believe the situation in Iraq is "headed in the wrong direction," Webb said, adding that he brings varied skills for fresh leadership on that and other issues.
