You're a BAD liberal if you...
Shop at WalMart

Watch ABC

Go to Disneyland

Eat meat

Own an SUV

Have a gun and hunt

Feel free to add your own.

It's one thing to make your case and try to persuade others to change based on logic, but I am so sick of all this fingerpointing and condemnation for those who make other choices in their life.

I will let my own conscience decide what I watch and eat and drive and live my life. Is there some sort of prize for winning the "holier than thou" liberal contest in which some are engaged?

11. Actually, I am a vegetarian
but my husband eats meat. I don't go around condemning him for it. Your life, your choice. However, I must admit I was proud the other night when he announced at dinner that he would no longer eat veal.

But, that's what I'm saying. He listened to the facts (from other sources), integrated it into his experience and came to a decision. No badgering could accomplish that.

Liberals with money are their worst nightmare.

I went to Wally's this morning for my prescriptions and a jug of detergent. I counted 3 Kerry stickers on the way in, and I parked close. No Stupid stickers. Overheard 2 conversations inside the store, against Stupid.

Boycott what you can. Spend your money wisely. Support Dem business when you can.

19. You're a bad liberal if you make sweeping black and white
generalizations.

You are a bad liberal if you shop at WalMart, and can afford to shop elsewhere.

You are a bad liberal if you uncritically accept the "entertainment" presented to you.

Humans are omnivores and are biologically geared for a mixed diet - eating meat is not liberal or conservative.

You are a bad liberal if you own an SUV just for the show - some (very few) people have legitimate reasons for owning one. Caveat: there's no excuse for owning a Hummer.

Guns: see "meat" above.

IMO, you are a bad liberal if you are selfish, thoughtless, uncaring, unconcerned - but those qualities also make you a bad conservative, or a bad person in general. A good liberal may do any of those listed things, but will think about WHY he (or she) does them.

23. The problem is that different people might come to different conclusions
And it's easy to be judgemental based on those conclusions.

Oy and boycotting ABC and Disneyland has little to do with uncritically accepting entertainment offered you; it is to punish ABC for putting on a miniseries this board found offensive. Or such is my understanding.

30. Mostly Agree With You
Edited on Tue Sep-19-06 03:40 PM by The Deacon
I own an SUV because my job required that I be able to get out regardless of the weather (disaster response - the worse the weather the more likely I'd be out in it) so I needed 4 wheel drive. I chose an SUV to make family vacations more comfortable. Now I'm stuck with the gas guzzler when what I really want is a hybrid Escape or similar (can't afford to replace it.)
I agree there is no reason for anyone to own a Hummer H2 or H3 - but there are several times I could have REALLY used a Hummer H1 (basically the same as a Humvee - which is what we had to be rescued by when the National Guard came & saved our bacon - love those guys.)
Hunting? Don't do myself, don't understand it, don't judge those who do (as long as they are responsible - Cheney shouldn't be allowed in the same state as a loaded weapon.)

My definition of a Bad Liberal? Anyone who confuses tools (SUVs, guns) with the people behind them. Anyone who assumes that a bad habit, lifestyle choice or method of recreation (smoking, meat eating, hunting and/or vacationing at Disney) automatically negates everything else about that person - that is the exact same thing as judging someone by skin color, religion or country of national origin.

Am I sometimes a Bad Liberal (or Progressive, the term I prefer)? You damnbetcha. I'll (personally) try to do better.

28. And you're a really bad liberal
if you write on internet message boards, that cannabis smoking is
OK, actually quite pleasant at times.

Bad liberals are stoned liberals, then instead of flying about on
magic carpets fixing the world, we instead fill in white space with little
black things, grouped together in sequences to trigger semantic visions
in a series of brains of bodies long dead, living in spinal fluid with
the false illusion of corporal form.

Bad bad liberals are even conservatives at times, refusing to do shit,
not wanting to pay taxes for wars, and even believing that less government is
better by returning franchise to the indivdiual.

:bluebox: Approach LIHOP/MIHOP with any, and I mean even the slightest, degree of skepticism and open inquiry.

:bluebox: Postulate that Bill Clinton did so some good things as president, and his two terms were more than the sum of welfare reform and NAFTA.

:bluebox: Enjoy NASCAR.

These types of opinions (and the examples you cited) are born of dogma, heated in a crucible of moral certainty, and dispensed with the fervor of an evangelical. This is a symptom of ideological calcification, and is endemic on both ends of the spectrum. Having been denied power, opportunity, and a voice for so long, many on the Left will succumb to the tendency to cling more and more to their comforting version of the "the truth" as the means of salvation. Problems are large and often seem intractable. So as a means of grappling them, just apply the solutions I know will work best, and everything will be okay.

The neocons have already reached that point. They have the same moral certitude and monopoly on "the truth", and they have been more or less successful in trying to enact these "truths" this past half decade. As progressives, although we must counter the harmful effects of their agenda, we must exercise equal caution that our agenda is not as exacting on dogma and loyalty to the party line - that we must be willing to consider the Big Picture without getting bogged down into 1,000 tiny ones. One of the criteria which makes me a progressive is that I want to embrace change for the betterment of society, reduce and eliminate poverty, ensure fairness and equality under the law, and promote environmental preservation - as well as being able to see the context in everything - thus the Big Picture. George Orwell warned us in Homage To Catalonia that the Left had a tendency to splinter itself based on uncompromising argumentation on what constitutes the 'correct' application of socialism, or communism.

Granted, to those who see boycotting Wal-Mart, or any of the other things listed, as promoting and enacting the same values I espouse above, I would say yes, I agree that it is an effective means. Very sound arguments can be, and are made which demonstrate how shopping at Wal-Mart is damaging to progressive values. But this does not mean that there is a dearth of sound arguments on why shopping at Wal-Mart is a viable option for those residing in rural areas or small suburbs with few options - and yes, I know Wal-Mart probably created those limited options (hence a vicious circle) - and therefore anyone who argues contrary to the prior points must surrender their liberal creds. These kinds of seeming self-contradictions do not sit well with the morally and ideologically certain. As progressives, we should welcome the shades of grey and nuance in arguments, and not become which we despise: Reactionaries.

Shop at WalMart - I do shop at Wal-Mart when I venture out which is not much; since December, I have been out of my house three times.

Watch ABC - I didn't know we weren't supposed to watcg ABC - what's the deal here?

Go to Disneyland - Little chance of this, since it is difficult for me to go around the block.

Eat meat - OK, I do eat meat and I am trying to change this - this is the only post that I really do want to change a bit.

Own an SUV - I own a Jeep Cherokee that is started about twice a month.

Have a gun and hunt - I have a gun but I don't and never would hunt. I am not going to be a hypocrite here though until I really do stop eating meat, I am not going to act like it is any different than going into a grocery store and buying hamburger.

36. I'm with you
Political correctness keeps a lot of otherwise liberal people out of our end of the spectrum, and forces them into the arms of the Repukes. It's been the Repuke strategy for decades to find the most idiotic PC people in the world, then paint them as typical Dems. And there is a ton of this nonsense on this board.

If you don't like meat, don't eat it. You are not going to change the minds of the other 95 percent who do eat meat. Smoking is not worse than child-molesting. Not everyone can ride a bike to work each day. Some people need trucks and even SUVs. Guns are highly useful. And if not, they can be fun. I could go on and on and on.

Keep your eyes on the prize. Things like universal health care, living wages, pollution control and the really important shit. Yeah, cows are cute, but they wouldn't even exist if we didn't raise them for food. And if you doubt that, set one free and see how long it lives.

45. I think mine would be "support job offshoring".
Circumstances prevent some people from following those listed above. WalMart, shitty, cluttered and evil as they are, may be the only shopping option for some. Maybe someone's got a Good Morning America or Daisy Duck itch, I don't know. I'm a barbecuer of ribs and hope there's one last good day before I stick the NB Smoker in the garage for 7 months. Lots of dems are responsible gun owners.

SUVs . .. man I can't defend that. Those shits are gas-guzzling, obstructive, handle poorly, are dangerous and piss me off on the highway. But if they're convenient for the kids . .. :bounce:

But yeah, that's always been the one broken camel's back for me. I think if you're all for destroying one middle class to elevate another; if you think that the fallout from someone losing his/her job is nothing more than collateral damage that will work itself out in the end; if you buy into the "retraining" horseshite; If you think The World is Flat is a phenomenal and sensible piece of writing; if you buy into the "xenophobia" argument (ignoring the fact that the American workforce is made up of many races and ethnic groups that are also affected by this) . . .. yeah, then you get dropped in the Red X toilet. Sorry. I've talked to and personally seen too many people's lives ruined because of this practice.

Don't use public transportation instead of driving a car. And the fact that you live in a place where public transportation comes no where near you house is no excuse. WALK!

You know, I've said it before and I'll say it again -- some people who post on DU are as judgmental and closed minded as the freepers, only with better grammar.

RIGHT NOW!!!!! When the CEO resigns? When they apologize for that fiasco of a mini-series? When they show a pro-liberal mini series? When? What would be good enough?

I know it's ultra-commercial, over-priced, sanitized, and homogenous, but I grew up near the place, went the DL all he time as a kid and still love it. I'm willing to go along with the boycott to make Disney/ABC think twice for a while, but not indefinitely. That new Space Mountain they built looks cool! If they tear down that GAWD AWFUL Small World and build something ultra cool, or they threaten to tear down the Roger Rabbit ride, then I'm breaking it to ride the wizecracking Taxi one last time.

ABC? Nothing worth watching since they hired Tony Danza for a "family comedy" (true jump the shark moment) in the 80s, so no problem for me.

53. You are a bad liberal if you have more than £50, and I'm serious.

The fact in light of which all moral judgements have to be made is that a few pounds is all it costs to provide medical treatment that can safe a child's life in the third world.

Whenever you buy a CD, you could use that money to save a live instead.

If, like me, you don't let that stop you buying CDs on occasion, you are not merely a bad liberal but a bad person. It's a terrible thing to realise, but it's true: any degree of material wealth is completely incompatible with any degree of personal morality.

People always mock liberals for guilt and self hatred, but the amazing thing is not how much liberals in the first world feel guilty, but how little they do.

Fat is always due to laziness, ignorance, gluttony and other moral turpitude. That's why only freeps are fat. In fact obesity is one of the most reliable signs of someone being a freep. Unless you're a fat child, in which case your parents are freeps.

No word yet on whether being fat as a child makes you grow up into a freep. I hope this oversight is addressed, as I never knew I was a freep till I read it here.

79. Sure
Just about every time there's a thread about Limbaugh, Rove or any other fat neocon, there are plenty of comments that link their weight with their ideology, along the lines of "What do you expect from a fat fuck like that?" Whole categories of bad liberals are fat, like NASCAR fans (fat beer drinkers) and SUV drivers (they need big vehicles to haul around their big butts). I've read comments like this time and again. I don't need DU to make me feel good about myself, thank god, so I shrug it off; but I sure understand how TS/TG's feel when Anne Coulter is demonized for her Adam's apple instead of her reprehensible views.

I was just at Walmart last Friday night. I needed to pick up chips, sodas and ice cream for work for Saturday and with $30 to spend (and needing to get stuff for 25 people) I knew they would be cheapest.

I went to Disney World when I was 4, and though that doesn't really count, I would love to go back.

I eat meat just about every day...and I love it.

I don't own an SUV, but there's a V10 TDI Touareg on our showroom, that I would love to have if I could afford it. It's got a monster under the hood, and I'd love to take that off road.

I don't hunt and also don't own a gun. But, I considered for a long time about getting a gun, well I'm still considering it too.

Oh, and I love Grey's Anatomy, so there's no way I'm boycotting ABC. And I never listened to AAR anyways, so I really don't care that Mike Malloy got fired.

92. forgive my ignorance, but
as a liberal, I always thought it was sort of an obligation to tolerate others' views, even when they are at odds with my views. Although I don't shop at walmart, or hunt, and I drive a station wagon (ford - gay friendly last I heard), I love a good steak, just took the kids to Disney and I watch ABC (sometimes). I don't agree with a lot of opinions here, but I enjoy the fact that we can respectfully disagree, and I must admit, I've learned a few things by listening to other points of view. So I think I'm a GOOD liberal. (I'm a bad Catholic, but that's for another thread).

I shop for groceries at Wal-Mart (for some things) because I cannot pass up the 30% discount.

I WILL NOT watch ABC or have any business dealings with anyone associated with ABC/Disney, but everyone has to decide which battles to enjoin.

I own SEVERAL guns and plenty of ammo. I think EVERYONE should, especially Liberals.

Our family no longer owns an SUV, but our "3rd" vehicle is a big pickup because I often NEED A TRUCK.

I eat meat, but my wife does not, she is vegan.

So, I do what I can to be a good person and I damn sure don't care about any internet boardster's opinion of my correctness, we all have to live with our own consciences, and I sleep fine :)

116. I think you're missing the point of the original post
I don't think any one of those things necessarily makes anyone a "bad liberal." The point of the post was a plea for understanding and tolerance among those who are supposed to be on the same side of the aisle.

There has been quite a bit of divisiveness around here and I think it should stop.

I don't hunt, but my dad did and it, along with fishing, certainly helped put food on the table. My point is that no one should be judged by someone else's standards of what a "good liberal" should or should not do.

A good liberal is one always working to eliminate their own prejudices.

PS: except for child molesters. That's where my tolerance ends, and I have no pity for what made them what they are.

Even gun owners can support gun control legislation. Hell, if you're totally against letting people use guns as weapons, then a hunting rifle should be the only gun available anyway. Because it's not made for personal use or concealability. (unless you've got a REALLY BIG trenchcoat.)

I'm not against people using guns as weapons at all; I'm just against criminals and the irresponsible doing so.

Most gun owners own them for their defensive utility, with recreational target shooting coming in second place and hunting a distant third; only 1 in 5 gun owners is a hunter.

My wife and I own several guns between us, but not a single "hunting weapon" (though a number of our rifles, including her SKS, my civvie AK lookalike, and our Mosin-Nagants, would be suitable for deer, were we among the minority of gun owners who hunt).

Dems and the Gun Issue - Now What?

The way some people state it, you're an evil right-winger if you own a nonhunting gun. Which is just as much BS as saying you're an evil right-winger for owning a hunting gun.

160. Not Bad, Just Totally Freaking Clueless
Look, if you are driving around with an anti-Bush sticker on the back of an SUV, you don't get it.

If you think you hate child labor, sweatshops, and unfair business practices that kill the little guy but you still shop at Wal-Mart, you have missed the point.

If you are frightened by media consolidation but listen to Air America on a Clear Channel station instead of locally produced shows aired on indie or community media outlets, you just may be working against your own beliefs.

If you want to feed and clothe every person on the face of this planet yet you eat beef as often as possible, you either haven't read enough or you don't understand the problem.

Is some of this unavoidable? OF COURSE IT IS: we are living in the middle of the largest and most effective hegemonic colonizing force in history, hyper-capitalism. You can't make it through life (at least life "in the grid") without acknowledging that fact and living with its reality. It is when you allow this reality to lower every act you may take in rebellion against this horrid mega-machine into a haze of equivocation that you lose your way. It doesn't matter what you say you believe -- that vanishes as soon as the words disintegrate into the wind or the paper hits the recycling bin -- what counts is how you act on those beliefs to help bring the planet back from the edge of oblivion. If you allow cynicism and equivocation to win, we all lose.

Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 01:03 PM by Thankfully_in_Britai
You would certainly get that impression from reading DU. Sectarian secularism is increasingly the fashion on the left and all too often it seems like people with any sort of religious faith are simply not welcome on the left at all.

Beside that? Well there are a few people on the left who do look down on people like me for the heinous crime of supporting a football team for one.

Some people get all in a huff about where you shop (as you point out, although over here most of the bile is directed towards Tesco). The fact that all too often there ain't much choice about where to shop anyway, or that shopping in an ideologically pure manner is hideously expensive just does not register with some people.

Some people think that going to certain schools or being part of organisations such as the Scouts makes you a bad liberal.

Some people think that donating to the wrong sort of Charities (such as Christian Aid) makes you a bad liberal.

Some people think that disliking drugs and disliking the company of druggies makes you a bad liberal.

Some people also think that you are a bad liberal if you are in certain jobs. The fact that often it's a choice between a job that is not ideologically pure and not having a job at all just does not register with some people.

190. Well, I don't have percentages but in some parts of the country
4WD is pretty necessary. Also, anybody that tows stuff regularly is going to need something bigger than a car. That being said, there is no excuse for driving a hummer and I doubt people with luxury SUVs are going to be the ones getting their car dirty.

...if you believe that Islamic fundamentalism is a real threat and Islamist terrorism exists.

...You express skepticism of MIHOP theories.

...You don't support anyone that hates Bush, including other fanatical and authoritarian leaders of other nations.

...You don't use a MAC.

180. Your a bad liberal if you----
--support ANY laws limiting the right to an abortion by female adults.
--support ANY laws limiting the right to read or consume pornography by adults.
--support ANY laws limiting the right of consenting adults to marry regardless of gender.
--support ANY laws limiting the right of adults to consume narcotics.
--support ANY laws allowing ANY form of censorship for ANY reason.
--support a Draft (involuntary servitude) for ANY reason.
--defend dictatorships or genocide anywhere in the world. (That doesn't you are obligated to physically attack dictatorships or physically prevent all genocides by armed attack, but a liberal cannot defend them as decent or moral.)
--support ANY laws which would forbid a 'pulling of the plug' in a Terry Schiavo type case.

181. Good post.
Sometimes I feel like DU is getting a little too lock-step for my liking.

185. Fortunately, there are sex-positive feminists around.
It's scary when liberals act like fundies once porn is brought up.

189. good liberals can eat meat
and own guns and hunt

but you can't believe any conspiracy theory or any part of a conspiracy theory or question the official explanations of major events like the Kennedy assassination or 9-11, because to do so might embarass Democrats and liberals in the eyes of right wingers.
