Who the hell taught George W. Bush to speak - he's AWFUL!!!
Whenever George is on TV, I usually change the channels

But since his UN speech was on Keith Olbermann, I watched it.

And I noticed a strange speaking pattern to his speeches

It seems George reads a simple sentence

And then George pauses

And then George reads the next sentence on his speech copy

And then George pauses again

And then he says the next sentence

It's damn annoying if you ask me

Probably as annoying as how I'm posting in this thread

But this is Bushified version of posting

Thank you for having me here!

1. Is it to sound important? Is he listening in his headphones and
repeating wht they are saying? I dunno!

3. With the UN speech
You could see George look down at the podium

And even once he flipped a page.

But I'm sure there were earsets involved.

Personally, I found it a far cry from the speeches that Bill Clinton would make. Sure he had the notes stashed away somewhere, but Clinton was smart enough to learn the speech, understand what was in the speech and then speak from his heart; usually without the pauses between every sentence. (BTW, I'm switching to Clinton-style posting for this section).

2. Well in fairness the Mind Numbingly Evil Reticulons who are
programming him do not naturally think in english - so it's not surprising that he's not as fluent as he might be.

Annoying? You want to hear annoying?? He was 'good' yesterday. He read slowly and enunciated well...

5. Here's the scary thing . . .
If you look at speeches earlier in his career (debates with Anne Richards circa 1994, f'rinstance), he speaks reasonably well -- decently cadenced, adequately nimble in turning phrases, some life behind the eyes . . . but all the speeches I've ever seen him do as president have been this same mechanical hammering at the obvious with no life and no heart.

Something went wrong with his brain between 1994 and the present. You could see it during the Gore AND Kerry debates -- a clear deterioration (not that he debated well either time).

He's losing his mind.

10. I think the difference is the Audience
Texas was already starting to move to the right when Bush ran and he had a smaller audience to appeal to. All he had to do was slander Ann Richards through some disgusting political ads and he probably came off as a charmer in the debates.

But now he's talking to the entire country AND the fact that nothing passes the lips of George Bush without getting pre-approval from Dick & Karl. Perhaps he's a better speaker than what I give credit for but if he's not writing his own stuff then he probably just feels uncomfortable saying it

32. As a Texan, I heard him speak when he ran against Ann Richards....
He impressed me as a half-bright fratboy. Not charming at all & not really "intelligent"--but not brain damaged.

Bush is probably getting his formal speeches through earphones. Thus the fractured cadence. When he "improvises"--he's really scary.

20. He also didn't have that phony rhinestone-cowboy accent
I've had a few friends from Texas, and some of my relatives grew up there when my Uncle Mac was stationed at Fort Bliss. It really grates on me to hear it. It's like a when a white racist comedian does a "black" accent.

In 1994, Bush was just a standard-issue GOP tool. He also had a few good ideas which, unfortunately, seem to have been more window dressing than reality (e.g., his alleged commitment to education).

How Bush doesn't cringe with humiliation every time he sees a recording of himself, I'll never know.

9. It's probably deliberate...
Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 08:18 AM by Crankie Avalon
...his handlers over the years have probably drilled it into him that the type of voter he needs to reach is the bottom 50% of the population who can best follow along if he uses short, simple sentences (or not even sentences, but phrases and fragments). Even if he were still capable of it, he would never speak in a more articulate fashion because it would go straight over the head of his "base." (I say "still" because I've seen film of him as a younger man where he spoke much more fluidly and like a normal person of average intelligence).

His father was similarly schooled to reinvent himself by aping the speech of John Wayne (Bush pere tried to slow down his speech, seem less hysterical, etc.). It never really worked for the father the way the son's adopted style worked for him.

EDIT TO ADD: And no matter where the venue, he is ALWAYS addressing those American voters who are solidly below average (e.g., tellin' them fancy furriners what's what with some good ole "plain talk," etc.).

14. The pauses are a moment for him to determine...
whether or not his audience is buying his lies. If you'll notice, he pauses and looks at the audience in anticipation of either thunderous applause or to give him time to assess their reaction to his oratory. When there is no reaction, he gives a look of disgust, mumbles "those stupid clowns couldn't recognize a good speech if they heard one" and moves on to the next sentence.

15. Not quite....
The pause comes at the end of the line (or cue card), whether or not it is the end of a sentence or a logical place to pause.

To use part of your example, its more like:

Whenever George is on TV, I usually (pause)

change the channels (pause)

But since his UN speech (pause)

was on Keith Olbermann, I watched it. (pause)

And I noticed a strange speaking (pause)

pattern to his speeches

I noticed it either during his campaign in 2000 or shortly after he was appointed president in the context of ponderings about how Saturday Night Live, Jay Leno, etc. impersonators would treat him. It seemed to me to be the most obvious thing to caricature, not to mention that it drives me to distraction on the rare occasion I decide I should listen to him.

To be fair, I don't recall hearing anyone else comment on it that long ago - and when I imitated it people looked at me as if they didn't understand what mocking - so I expect I am particularly sensitive to that speech pattern. This trait has become much more pronounced over time, and in the last couple of years I've heard a lot more public comment on it.

Also, he is inconsistent in using those pronounciations. He's an idiot.

The reason, I think, is that he simply never cared about education. I don't care what people say about how he's pretending to be dumb... I think he'll go down in history simply as the Idiot President.

25. If the guy applied himself he's probably very intelligent
But he's never really been given reason to apply himself.

He got into Yale and Harvard solely on family name (and was a "C" student), he was given his own business to run (and bankerupt) and was only pushed into national office back in 1992 after his dad lost his presidential re-election.

The guy never had to put much thought into anything he has done in his life. And as the resident sitting in the White House, he clearly shows that his workload consists of trotting him out for a few key speeches and stump for candidates during the election season. I highly doubt he does anything more in the backroom meetings other than to sit there and try not to fall asleep.

Perhaps the reason he's having such difficulty with these speechs could be due to the fact that perhaps he doesn't really believe anymore in what he is doing especially in light of the fact that he could go down in history as one of the most corrupt and evil pResidents especially with this torture stuff

Apply himself (or herself). I'm one of them, to a degree.

But a lively conversation is possible with these folks. Their brains move quickly & they've done some interesting things. Maybe even read some interesting things--and NOT just the stuff assigned in class. (Alas, sometimes instead of the stuff assigned in class.)

Bush is the last guy I'd want to "have a beer with." He'd just tell racist/sexist jokes & then turn really mean.

Let me add that some of the people I'm talking about were "experienced" in the old days. But they managed not to fry their brains.

I've lived in Texas most of my life & even know people who made their living with cattle. But none of them sounded remotely like (afraid of horses) Bush when he's trying to act Texan.
