Too many DUers are being duped by this "Bush poll bounce" nonsense
Buyer's remorse: The Bush story the press won't tell
—Eric Boehlert

Despite the obvious signs it exists -- and has for nearly 20 months -- the pervasive buyer's remorse that hovers around President Bush's second term, as measured by public opinion polls, remains off limits for the press. The topic is all but banned from polite discussion among elite Beltway press players who seem to be deeply invested in the success of the Bush administration.

The issue of buyer's remorse is directly connected to a larger, twofold problem surrounding the ongoing coverage of Bush's polling numbers. First, there's developed a pervasive press obsession with trying to be the first to document Bush's rebound in the polls. (It stands in stark contrast to the press conduct during President Clinton's second term when reporters and pundits were forever hunting, unsuccessfully, for evidence that Clinton's popularity was slipping.)

Secondly, and just as disturbing, is the categorical refusal by the press to put Bush's consistently dreadful poll numbers into any kind of historical context. The fact that Bush has been bogged down for much of this year with poll numbers in the 30's is nothing short of astonishing. In the last half-century, the only other comparable second-term collapse belonged to Richard Nixon, whose fall, of course, was fueled by the revelation that a criminal enterprise had been operating from inside the Oval Office. Yet Bush's second-term performance is rarely mentioned in the same breath as Nixon's.

Quite the contrary, despite historic dissatisfaction with Bush, the press continues to depict him as the central, charging force in American politics, while setting aside all sorts of time and energy trying to document Bush's (we're told) inevitable rebound.

3. Come to N.C..
They all think he is doing Gods will. My guess a 75% approval rating here. Gas prices go down, terror threats go up......His approval will go up. It will be over 50% by the time elections roll around. too many sheep watching propaganda TV.

8. I don't know what part of NC you're in...
But I'm guessing it's not the BLUE part.
He might have small pockets of 75% approval here
and there, but his overall NC rating is still below 50%.

Here in Durham, I'll bet it's under 20.

10. Talking with elderly
next door neighbor here in southwest Durham who admits voting for the monkey, but is now suffering buyer's remorse. Admittedly, I don't know hundreds of people here, but the Bush voters I have spoken with are all disenchanted for one reason or another.

it was over for this guy. My dad's in Missouri.

What BushCo has is power, hype and theivery. They don't have popular opinion.

I work in the Cary Apex area, and the only complaint I get from the sheep is the gas prices, and they took care of that.

I'm hardly one to talk, since I've missed about a years worth now,
but I recommend them highly!

Drop by the NC forum for dates/times/locations- they're always

24. His approval rating in NC is 45%
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 04:02 AM by Lasher
This is according to a Survey USA poll that was released on 9/19/06.

http://www.surveyusa.com/50State2006/50StateBushApproval060919State.htm

There is a total of 13 states that have a presidential approval rating this high or higher. The highest is Utah, at 59%. The lowest is Rhode Island, with a 23% approval.

Personally, I disapprove 100%. :)

Edit: If you click on NC at the above site you can see details that include regional statistics.

Charlotte & West 47%
Raleigh & Greensboro 45%
South & Coast 41%

16. Well, I wouldn't know from N.C. so you have me there.
But, the Dems have the numbers and you know that real conservatives are alarmed by this extremist who claims to be a conservative.

Imho, what the Cabal has is noise -- oh, and Diebold et all.

4. I don't fault the polls
As Boelert says, it's the interpretation of the polls that's the problem.

The margin of error on all these polls is at best 3%. When a poll or two shows Bush's approval rating as 43% instead of 41%, it's nothing more than an excursion toward the upper bound of the MOE. Pundits make way too much out of precise numbers that result from an intrinsically imprecise art.

NOT => a "re-bound." :eyes:

11. This is all a scam, there is no bounce!
Catwoman,

I have posted this twice and this makes the third time. This is all just a fluke, or worse, in just one poll, which is being deceitfully hyped by the media as gospel.

The highly touted "latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll" ran from 9/15/06 to 9/17/06, but the corporate news media is not mentioning a 9/14/06 to 9/17/06 Survey USA poll that gave The Decider a 39% approval rating.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/

The Real Clear Politics composite shows Chimpy's approval rating at 40.8%, which is close to where it has been - despite this unusually high approval rating that Gallup has reported. For the record, this is the very first time I have ever seen any presidential approval poll higher than Rasmussen's during an equivalent time period.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/polls/archive/?poll_id=19#data

And while you're at the above site, compare Gallup's latest generic congressional vote poll results with all the others.

:hi:

Dana Milbank just said on Countdown that there is a new CBS poll out today that goes against this propaganda, too.

I'll see if I can find it.

on edit, here it is:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/20/us/politics/21pollcnd.html?_r=1&ref=politics&oref=slogin

With the midterm elections less than seven weeks away, Americans have an overwhelmingly negative view of the Republican-controlled Congress, with substantial majorities saying that they disapprove of the job it is doing and that its members do not deserve reelection, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.

The Times/CBS News poll also found that President Bush did not improve his own or his party’s standing through the intense campaign of speeches he made and events he attended surrounding the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The speeches were at the heart of a Republican strategy to thrust national security to the forefront in the fall elections.

Mr. Bush’s job approval rating was 37 percent, virtually unchanged from the last Times/CBS News poll, which was conducted in August. On the issue that has been a bulwark for Mr. Bush, 54 percent said they approve of the way he is managing the effort to combat terrorists, again unchanged from last month, though up from earlier this spring.

26. Thanks, I hadn't yet seen the new CBS poll
It will be interesting to see how (or if) the corporate news media plays this today. RCP has picked it up by now and it balances out their composite approval rating at a more realistic 40%.

14. They have to do this so when they steal the election again it looks legit.
I expect him to be at 50% or more come late October and the Pukes to be in position to gain seats, regardless of what the truth is. The fascist element that has been slowly taking this country apart since the death of FDR has a stranglehold on power that they will not relinquish. They will hold on to this power by any means necessary be it election fraud or outright murder. They are, quite simply, Nazis. I don't know what we can do short of full on revolution and the people are too complacent to bother to save themselves. Hell, I think there is a good portion of this country that would actively embrace this Nazism.

We must fight on because we have no choice but we are at a serious disadvantage.

23. What amazes me..
... is that the infallible Republican spin-doctors and meta-planners haven't figured out what 2/3rds of the country gets full well.

Bush can make 10 speeches a day until his term is over - nobody gives a shit what he says any more because it is 100% lies, platitudes, and promises he has no intention on making good on.

They trot him out as though anyone but the 30% idiot-contingent cares. They don't.

If there is any bounce at all, and I mean if, it's over gas prices.

He sold us a bill of goods to get us into Iraq, and his story has completely changed. Now he's trying to improve his approval rating with his nonstop SSDD tour? If he wants his numbers to look better the best thing he can do is stay out of sight.

28. The poll bounce myth is to make the election plausible
If the polls were shown to be what they are, they could not farkle with the election results and have them believable. But if people think that the polls show it is close they are more likely to believe the election results.
