Clinton criticizes Chavez for likening Bush to the devil

Deutsche Presse Agentur
Published: Wednesday September 20, 2006

Washington- Bill Clinton came to the defence of his successor on Wednesday, saying Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez should not have referred to US President George W Bush as "the devil." Clinton said Chavez's name calling during a speech before the UN General Assembly does not serve the interest of his country or his presidency.

"Obviously I think he made a mistake," Clinton said in an interview scheduled to air on CNN Wednesday night. "He's not hurting us, he's just hurting himself and his country."

Speaking from the same podium as Bush had a day earlier, Chavez accused Bush of being a "devil" with imperialist ambitions.

58. He can kiss that Security Council seat goodbye for starters
He didn't exactly prove himself an international statesman with that performance.

And regardless of how * has squandered US prestige internationally, even trashed our good name, we ARE still one of what - two remaining superpowers?

It was stupid on Chavez' part. Some DUers (apparently a lot of DUers, or at least a lot of vocal ones) need to set aside their Bush-hatred (and I've got plenty of that) and take a bit longer view of this.

This will only draw negative attention to himself and the people of his country. I am sure if Bush would have said this about Chavez, Clinton would have come out and said the same thing.

Edited on Wed Sep-20-06 04:49 PM by HypnoToad
Though don't expect me to side with Chavez or that truly oafish dingaling who runs Iran any time soon...

And I hate to say it, Clinton has a point: What has Chavez done to the US? Okay, he gave cheap oil to some American neighborhoods - but was that really out of altruism? I'm not inclined to think so.

And is this the Stockholm Syndrome? Or, rather, if I hated a person so much because of how he treated me in the past, I can't see why I'd forgive and defend him later on... Well, I can think of two reasons... one of them less flattering than the other... Clinton lost his cred a long time ago; what's he doin' hanging around these days?

16. please, most people in the US don't think about anything
Chavez knows how to get on the boob tube, god knows if he said anything serious he'd never make it on to ABC NEWS or FOX.

This is exactly what the airheads on tv love, who knows, maybe even a few people would be angry enough to get off their ass and read a newpaper.

Chavez is great to stir things up, and is unpopular with all the right people. gotta love it for sheer entertainment value alone

38. Clinton is wrong this time
I usually respect Big Dog but this time I have to disagree. Let's face it, from Chavez' perspective Bush is the "devil". Bush supported the 2002 coup attempt against Chavez, the democratically elected leader of Venezuela. It is so ironic how America loves the idea of "democratically elected leaders" as long as they tow the American line. The minute people in another country dare to prefer someone with a different perspective we drop the "democratic" mantra and attack them. Look at what happened in Palestine with Hamas. The people elected Hamas and the Shrubbies immediately jumped back aghast at the result.

Personally I think Bush has many of the attributes not only of the devil but of the Anti-Christ. The whole purpose of the General Assembly is for each member nation to comment on their concerns and issues so that the UN can understand the work that is to be undertaken in the next term.

He followed up that initial statement with a statement that he thought would have been more helpful to Chavez--I cannot recall exactly what he said but it was basically a statement about bush's policies etc.

Clinton did not act outraged he just tactfully inferred that his tone didn't serve his cause (Chavez') or help his country and that he might have done it differently.
