Hang or not -- it's still a somewhat free nation. But there is a reason I continually draw a line between the Democratic party and the various socialist groups. One of the more effective pieces of GOP propaganda is that the Democratic party is socialist. "Vote Democrat," goes the implied warning, "and the government will sieze private property, nationalize industry, create barriers to economic change, and flush the economy down the toilet." That's nonsense, of course. The vast majority of Democrats, and almost all Democratic politicians, are no more socialist than Bill Gates. Still, it's effective nonsense. I know good people who hate what the GOP is doing to this nation, who support civil liberties, who want religion out of government, who want science funding budgeted without wingnut constraint. The one thing that keeps them from throwing their support behind the Democratic Party is the lurking fear that if you scratch a Democrat, there's a would-be socialist underneath.

So yeah, I draw that line. I don't want the wingnuts pointing to this thread and saying, "See? The folks over at Democratic Underground are socialist." Of if they do, I want others peaking here, the ones who can read, thinking or replying, "sure there are some socialists hanging around there. But read the rest of the posts. That's not what the Democratic Party is about."
