Judge Orders More Gitmo Papers Unsealed
Judge Orders More Gitmo Papers Unsealed
AP 9/20/6 LARRY NEUMEISTER

A federal judge on Wednesday ordered the Department of Defense to release documents detailing mistreatment or disciplinary action taken against detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and other information sought by The Associated Press.

U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff said the government must provide the news organization with the information despite government claims that doing so would violate detainees' privacy.

"The public interest in disclosing government malfeasance is well-established," the judge wrote in saying that the AP had demonstrated the need.

2. The government claims releasing the documents

would violate the detainees' privacy? WTF? After they've been waterboarded, tied up, beaten, and God only knows what else, I hardly think they are concerned about their "privacy." Hey, Bush, don't piss on my feet and tell me it's raining: the only "privacy" (that is, the desire to conceal criminal acts) you are concerned about protecting is yours and your torture-freak stooges'.

5. I'd like to donate to the Federal Judge Protection Program.
Sometimes feels like they are the last line between me and a detention center near Yuma.

11. And when will the govt comply?
Probably about the same time we see the Abu Ghraib photos....

Isn't "privacy" the same reason they are withholding those photos?

14. It's another district judge. They'll stall and appeal this over and over.
By the time the worst comes out they'll have tempered it again, like the Salon photos, by saying it's old news and those people were already punished. Everything they do is SOP to negate the outrage.
