Must watch VIDEO : Greg Palast's Chavez profile
Edited on Thu Sep-21-06 04:14 AM by BelgianMadCow
I took the liberty of reposting sfexpat2000's post in another Chavez thread, as I think this helps shed some light.

Especially watch out for the link between Sumate and Bush, exposed by a fellow investigative reporter in this profile.

"Link to stream Greg Palast's profile of Chavez -- a piece that might
have had some bearing on his recent arrest by DHS -- do ya think?

"A special report by independent journalist Greg Palast in which he travels to Venezuela on special assignment from Link TV to get beyond the U.S. media image of President Hugo Chavez and to find out why the Bush administration is trying to oust him. The report offers a never-before-seen interview with Chavez, insight into Chavez’s relationship with the U.S. as well as Chavez’s plans for Venezuela, perspectives from opposition party members and raw footage from the slums of Caracas. To view the 30-minute film in streaming format, click here."

http://www.linktv.org/pages/selectorPop.php4?caller=http://www.archive.org/download&prefix=bolivars_20060612&name=bolivars_20060612&filetype=mov

"Palast has been hailed as “the most important investigative reporter of our time” by Britain’s Tribune Magazine and is celebrated for his BBC exposé on the purge of black voters during the U.S. presidential election of 2000."
"

I have not a lot of knowledge about Venezuela or Chavez, but I can only say I find the man inspiring.
He clearly has vision and I sure like the alternative he is proposing.

1. I tend to think this is why Homeland Security arrested Greg,
not because Enron filed a complaint that their facility was in the background of a few feet of his New Orleans piece.

5. I hope you don't mind me reposting your post
I thought about asking you in the other thread but didn't want to give it a kick.
And I'm not used to much DU activity during my posting day :-)

9. Someone from Venezuela was posting on DU during the coup
they gave a lot of good information, it was pretty scary.

10. I don't think I was here yet and I sure didn't know who Chavez was.
It sounds as though it was very dangerous. And, it's still dangerous insofar as BushCo is actively trying to kill or depose Chavez via the usual pipeline of neocon advisors and monies to the right wing opposition.

11. No need to speculate;
HS was clear about the reason for Palast's arrest: he filmed a national security asset which turned out to be an Exxon oil refinery.

15. Do you think, rman, that Exxon would file a complaint about being
in the far background of a few feet of film? They might, but I guess I think they were coached.

BushCo must hate Palast for his domestic reporting, no doubt. But for him to go down and expose what they're doing in Venezuela must gall them even more imho.

17. Most big money interests hate Palast for
both his domestic and his foreign reporting.

Maybe Exxon was coached, but probably not by Enron.
I'd think though that Exxon itself has large enough interests to support a police state. People have been arrested under anti terrorism legislation for far less than what Palast did (ie in the UK for walking on a cycle path - i kid you not). It would not exactly be the first time that Big Capital supports some form of totalitarian regime in 'the civilized world' (see Mussolini, Hitler).

23. On second thought,
"big money interests hating Palast" is very likely to be reason why he was targeted.
So generally speaking i think you are correct. For some reason i thought you meant this docu specifically was the reason why Palast was arrested.

24. I did because even for Palast it's "over the top" as far as BushCo
is concerned because it steps into the foreign pollicy arena where they like to think they are in control.

26. I see. It's not the first time though
that Palast publishes on US foreign policy, and hints at clandestine meddling with foreign governments, see Palast's book "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy".
And i'm not aware that this particular publication is circulated more widely in the US than any other publication by Palast. Though i might be wrong there.

I think the arrest was done when it was done because they figured they had an opportunity to do so. Their plans don't always succeed. Though most likely even if they failed to hold Palast it will probably encourage some journalists to be a bit more careful about what they investigate...

They are harassing Palast for telling truths they don't want anyone to hear.

12. Thanks, bananas.
I'm downloading it now for viewing. Much appreciated. There is usually much more to the story in 3rd world nations sometimes than simple democracy vs. any other type of -ocracy you want to insert here. Especially in nations that were colonial possessions.

I'm anxious to see this and hope that Mr. Palast can be exonerated on whatever bogus thing they are charging him with. He's one of the few reporters out there worth following.

22. It's interesting the Chavez opposition has a problem with Chavez helping
other nations in Latin America ("Chavez is president of Venezuela, not of Latin America"), but does not have a problem with the US government helping the opposition in Venezuela to get rid of Chavez (is Bush president of the US and of Latin America?).

25. "We believe in Fair Trade.....
"We believe in Fair Trade, not Free Trade"--- Chavez

Chavez bought $2.5 Billion of Argentina's debt to the IMF so that Argentina could tell the IMF to "Fuck Off" instead of being forced to "privatize" their public assets (like drinking water).

No wonder the Global MegaCorporations hate Chavez and want their puppets (Bush/Republican Party) to take him out.

Someone needs to send John Kerry and the Democratic Party leadership a MEMO.

The Democratic Party is a BIG TENT, but there is NO ROOM for those
who advance the agenda of THE RICH (Corporate Owners) at the EXPENSE of LABOR and the POOR.

28. Interesting you should mention that book, second recommend.
The first being from my brother, who has listened to my rants on several occasions, but never joined the fray. One day, he had read it and was totally impressed and spoke out forcefullt. He's very rational and critical, so that meant a lot. As does your recommendation in light of this thread.

I'm glad you brought this up. X-mas present defined :-)
