Iraq torture 'worse after Saddam'

Torture may be worse now in Iraq than under former leader Saddam Hussein, the UN's chief anti-torture expert says.

Manfred Nowak said the situation in Iraq was "out of control", with abuses being committed by security forces, militia groups and anti-US insurgents.

Bodies found in the Baghdad morgue "often bear signs of severe torture", said the human rights office of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq in a report.

The wounds confirmed reports given by refugees from Iraq, Mr Nowak said.

He told journalists at a briefing in Geneva that he had yet to visit Iraq, but he was able to base his information on autopsies and interviews with Iraqis in neighbouring Jordan.

"What most people tell you is that the situation as far as torture is concerned now in Iraq is totally out of hand," the Austrian law professor said.

2. Did you see the tally of the Iraqi people dead by violence for 2 months?

It was 6,599 people killed violently in Iraq. That number was up 700 from the previous two month period.

I cannot imagine what hell the people of Iraq must go through on a daily basis, but I do know that whatever it is it's getting worse and not better thanks to bush.

I don't doubt that it's true, but I have one question, if Manfred Nowak is the UN's chief anti-torture expert, why the hell hasn't he even been to Iraq yet? What is he working on that's a "higher" priority?

6. US deal struck on terror suspects

US President George W Bush has reached a deal with rebel Republican senators on a controversial bill on the interrogation of terror suspects.

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley described the deal as a "framework for compromise".

The rebel senators had demanded a provision making it clear that torture of suspects would be barred.

The bill is expected to pave the way for the resumption of military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay.

7. How does a piece of legislation make * worse than Saddam?

We're talking about people being tortured, right? That, in my mind is always wrong regardless of what legislation is passed. I'm sure that what Hussein was doing wasn't illegal based on Iraqi law either, so this law doesn't really have any bearing on the number of people who were tortured or the type of "techniques" that are used. Either what's going on in Iraq is worse now, or when Saddam was in power, but in either case, legislation that hasn't been passed yet didn't cause it.

If you're arguing that once the legislation is implemented, it will definitely become worse, then I agree, but I understood the statements in the OP to be referring to what is going on now.
