Listen, the U.S. has been in the torture business for decades:
We've exported the "techniques" to Latin America for years, through our ironically named "School of the Americas." It's just that those chickens are coming home to roost, and we're doing it more directly now.

And soon, it will be on "fellow Americans" suspected of "thought crimes," no doubt...

3. Bringing it home is the whole point.
The objective is a reign of terror. Of course, torture will only be used on domestic terrorists (e.g. environmentalists aka eco-terrorists; war protestors aka domestic enemy combatants; WTO protestors aka economic terrorists, etc.).

You'll think twice about going to that antiwar demonstration if you know they might haul you off somewhere & pull out your fingernails.

4. I know - but the knowing doesn't make it any easier
what the knowing does do is tell me that America would rather be a lie than to ever hold itself accountable

and that a good many Americans would to

it's easier to believe your government is all good and decent than it is to question the things you've been taught about America since childhood.

Time doesn't heal all wounds. Never has. Never will.

5. True, and almost no Americans realize that
They think we're always the good guys handing out Hershey bars to war orphans. They really believe that Iraqi girls are going to school only because of the American invasion (They never could tell Afghanistan and Iraq apart...) They don't know about Mossadegh, Arbenz, Allende, and the other democratically elected leaders whom our CIA overthrew. They think the Sandinistas of Nicaragua were tyrannical Communists and Rios Montt of Guatemala was a good Christian man who brought democracy to his country.

They think that anti-Americanism exists because foreigners are "ungrateful."
