Now I'm really scared...seen on Countdown tonight.
That report Keith Olberman did tonight about Middlesbury (I think that was the name)a town in England where the surveilance cameras have speakers that call out to you and embarrass you in front of others. There are now five million cameras in Great Britain, snooping on it's citizens. One woman was ordered to pick up rubbish and dispose of it in a bin. All I could think of was a voice calling out, "Smith, Winston, why are you not joining in today's exercises, Comrade?"

If this is tolerated in the land of Orwell, we are not far behind.

I'm sick...

1. That was terribly
scarey. I wonder why this hasn't been reported anywhere else. I don't mean the corporate end of the media either, I haven't heard of it all. Did the report say how long this has been happening? And people there weren't upset, weren't revolting either.

5. That's what really freaked me out, Owl
Nobody seemed to give a rip.

Put a Starbucks and a McDonalds on every corner, give 'em cable TV and Ipods and you can keep the little people satiated and content while you steal their dignity and humanity right out from under them.

2. Don't worry...
...by the time Big Brother is in full force in the US all the proles will welcome it as a necessary step in the War on Terror.

After all, Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia...

6. Or, "what do you think about this Linda?" from Fahrenheit 451.
The TV screen was interactive. Linda was supposed to offer her opinion but she was too stoned to absorb the question. A Desperate Housewife prototype maybe?

7. Most frightening last line in a novel:
"Winston loved Big Brother."

8. They've reported on this
I remember a specific clip of the loudspeaker telling someone "Bikes not allowed in Pedestrian Zone", and that person freaking out (she almost fell off her bike).

You brits need to change some things...reminds me of the world of V for Vendetta.

9. Short term solution:

Just wear headphones in your ears everywhere you go - that way you just claim that you didn't hear what the fascists said - "Sorry ol' chap, I was listening to my iPod! Cheers!"
