The root of the problem

The real root of this problem, of course, is that the US has never submitted itself to the international courts. Therefore, we have little accountability to the rest of the world beyond unfriendly op-ed pieces in the foreign press. Therefore, if the rubber stamp congress passes legislation absolving "our" people from prosecution of war crimes in our own courts, the rest of the world can pound sand when it comes to trying to hold our adiminstration accountable.

1. Pretty much. Bush is counting on the international community not

pounding too hard...and if Congress gives him a pass, he won't be touched by our laws.

Bush'll live out his life not going to other countries..or countries that might issue a warrant. But in America, he'll be free...unless Congress holds him responsible.

and America will tell itself that "it's over", "let's move on", it's in the past", "let's get a fresh start"...all the while doing the exact same things that lead up to Bush to begin with...allowing the corrupt to walk free...preserving America's image of democracy over the substance of democracy. America's built around a lot of fine ideas...but what good are those ideas if you don't live up to them?

5. It's like the only adult in a roomful of children

who refuses to act like an adult and instead fights with the children for the last piece of pizza.

Just because we have the power to bully the others doesn't mean we ought to do it. Adult behavior involves forgiving the misbehaving child, demonstrating good behavior, and gently teaching the child how to act, not beating the child.

7. You are right that

the United States has never submitted itself to foreign jurisdiction. It's not likely to, either. but is that the root of the problem? Or is that just an expression of the will of the American people? Is the will of the American people the root of the problem?

But, then again Americans should take control of this country and rule instead of allowing corrupt rulers to control US.

10. Why not? If we can have Milosovich hauled up before The Hague

why can't other countries insist that our war criminals are treated the same? It is the threat of facing justice that prevents people from crossing the line -- Abu Grahib can only happen when the perpetrators believe they not only will face no punishment but believe they are doing what is expected of them.

To believe otherwise is to believe that the Geneva Conventions are, indeed, quaint.
