MSNBC: Chomsky a "disident," "marxist" supports overthrow of democracies
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 08:31 AM by jollyreaper2112
I watch Olbermann on tape. Naturally, the VCR shows the last channel that was on from recording. That's MSNBC. So there's some idiot blonde on there as the host and there are two other guys on there for an interview. I think they said one was a sitting congressman?! Anyway, they're talking about the whole UN show with Chavez and Ahmudinijininijijijad (damnit, Colbert has ruined me for that name.) So they mention the bit about Chomsky's book getting held up during a speech and how the sales skyrocketed. Why does the book have such a warm reception in America? The answer from the talking heads:

1. Chomsky is an American disident
2. He supports Marxist-Lenninism
3. He supports Chavez's goal of overthrowing democratically elected governments by force
4. There is still a warm reception for leftist and marxist ideology on American college campuses

What the fucking hell?!?! Olbermann should take these idiots to task. Bad enough he's sharing a network with bowtie boy and Rita Manvoice, now it looks like there's a rival for the throne of King Idiot of MSNBC.

1. Sometimes I feel like becoming a communist!
Just to push this whole debate WAY far to the left. I would make socialists look moderate and then what would the fucking liars do?

2. That is insane.
Is anti-neoliberalism such a threat to these people that they can't even address it honestly?

7. Why, yes it is.
In fact I am surprised the naysayers here haven't attacked the OP yet. They must still be abed. There is a large and very nasty contingent right (LOL) here on DU that don't appreciate any on the left whatsoever. Any outside of their beloved DLC confines are of no use to the "Party" (doesn't that sound familiar?) but they will accuse us of having a purity test. Too many would do nothing to advance the cause of the People in this Country, thinking their beloved Clinton the be all & end all of our cause.

13. Haven't you noticed that all they can do is lie?
Think about it. They certainly cannot use the truth or reasoned rational arguments based on the facts. They have no choice but to lie to make their case.

16. ...and distract
They talk about the 'el diablo' comment, but not about a single other element of the speech...until they talked about Chomsky, but only because the book moved to the top of the best sellers lists, so they have to lie about it.

9. I CANNOT SPEL!!!
I can't spel. Ugh. :) Dissident!

Anyway, I think this is the scary part of the way they spin shit, they just make outrageous claims and then it just becomes accepted. If I were a republican, the talking points would go something like this:

Me: I have a 12 inch penis!

Honest critic: Do you have proof?

Me: I have a 12 inch penis!

Honest critic: Pictures, maybe?

Me: I hae a 12 inch penis!

Honest critic: I have a ruler. Could we confirm this, please?

Me: I have a 12 inch penis!

Random critic: I don't want to hear about your 12 inch penis!

Honest critic: Wait a second, we still haven't established whether he has a 12 incher or not.

Me: I have a 12 inch penis!

Religious critic: Don't talk about penises in front of my children! They're only in their late teens and aren't ready to learn about such things!

Honest critic: But there's no proof!

Random critic: I still don't want to hear about it!

Reporter: Is it appropriate for Jolly to discuss his 12 inch penis in public?

Religious critic: I think it's awful. He's giving my wife these crazy ideas.

Ron Jeremy: Hey, can I get you for one of my videos?

Religious critic: I can't believe it, he's using his 12 inch penis for the evils of porn! He's supporting the terrorists!

Reporter: So, Jolly, do you see your 12 inch penis being used for good or for evil?

Honest critic: I give up.

And there you go. I could have a Republican microdick but as far as anyone else is concerned, it's established that mine is a mighty root. And incidentally, did you know Chomsky and Castro were gay lovers in college?

6. Dumb ass MSNBC! They can't suppress the truth that is out there though
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 08:46 AM by ShortnFiery
One of Chomsky's texts, the very one Chavez is recommending has soared to the top seller at Amazon.com.

What IMO the Pentagon PsyOps guided cable M$M fails to note is that MOST people in The USA know that they are disseminating disinformation and propaganda. Iraq drove that home to many and could help explain why people are immediately purchasing and perusing Chomsky's publications.

It's been a long 5+ years, but I honestly can feel an undercurrent of dissent, the patriotic kind of unrest that will hold OUR Representatives feet to the fire in order for them to support Their Constituents NOT Wall Street nor Large Corporate interests.

That is, unless there's extreme voter suppression and fraud - which NOW will be revealed by many scholars and can NOT be ignored ... three times will not be a charm for the republicans conducting wide scale election fraud.

I hope and pray that we get out in force, to send a message to OUR Representatives that they work for The People of The United States, NOT for The Executive Branch and The Republican Congress. :grr:

The USA M$M, both cable and broadcast, is consolidated into a Corporate Beastie - they are becoming irrelevant.

Thank God! :-)

8. fortunately, since sales of the book have taken off, people can learn
for themselves the "bent" of Chomsky's writings.
Still, I've given up on the sheeple's even "getting it." Whatever was said on MSNBC was in one ear and out the other anyway. I live in a college town and have been having to ride the bus lately, so am getting more of a "slice of life" view than I really want (I'm actually quite the hermit when I can be). What I see mainly is people completely clueless and unaware of the world of politics. They are chatting on their cell phones about the upcoming party before the big game or with their roommates about what to make for dinner, comparing notes about a test they just had, complaining about too-early classes, studying flash cards for a test, making appointments with professors or prospective employers on their cell phones. Once a long time ago I saw a young woman reading Franken's Lies and the Lying Liars and was delighted. The campus paper's occasional letters about * policies seem to run about 50/50 for or against, and political demos get lukewarm attendance.

11. College students are a lot more clueless than the general population
It's sad but true, but there has been a kind of "polar reversal" in the last 20 years. From the 1960s through about the early 1980s, college students tended to be more progressive and informed than the general population. Now they tend to be more conservative and less informed -- that's my impression from having taught intermittently at universities over the last decade or so. Of course, there are committed, progressive students, but they are in the minority, and the majority are basically focused on grades (without particularly thinking deeply to get them) and partying.

Meanwhile, I found something remarkable is happening in one of the poorest neighborhoods in NYC where I have a few acquaintances -- Coney Island. 9/11 truth type videos like Loose Change are spreading through the projects like wildfire. People who rarely vote or even have a firm grasp of the structure of politics are livid and passing these videos around like samizdat.

In middle class/working neighborhoods I frequent in Queens, the notion that Bush is a thug and dictator and that he had a hand in 9/11 is basically the common assumption of every political discussion that comes up.

18. that is excellent news!
yes, you do have a different perspective.
I do live in a working-class (mostly black) neighborhood surrounded by pricey student condos and believe the prevailing attitude in the neighborhood itself is anti-*.

10. How can you be called Marxist-Leninist if
you are anti-Leninist? Chomsky has always differed profoundly with Leninism.

14. Not so far and not according to their political theories.
See Leo Strauss and his neo-platonic rule of the elites:
"Many neoconservatives like Paul Wolfowitz are disciples of a philosopher who believed that the elite should use deception, religious fervor and perpetual war to control the ignorant masses."
http://www.alternet.org/story/15935/

It is all part of the plan and they do not think that the people will ever catch on. So far they have been right.

17. i should have said "the more obvious the lies" -
as in 'flying in the face of the facts'.

I think "big lies" work better the less people know, they don't work just because they're big.
