Under New Torture Rules The Interrogators Can Still "Pulpify" Legs?
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 11:49 AM by leftchick
Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan is step one and ground zero for US torture as far as I have read. It is horrifying beyond belief what has gone on there including Homicide by torture. In Our Names!

This poor man was not "the worst of the worst" as torture defenders keep saying! He was fucking INNOCENT! It has happened time and again that the US has and is holding innocent people and torturing them sometimes to DEATH!!!

Where the hell are the Democrats on that very important point? And I can only imagine what the animals who do this are like once back in civilian life......

<snip>

HOMICIDE

Dilawar was a twenty-two-year-old farmer and taxi driver, whom American soldiers tortured to death over five days at Bagram Collection Point in Afghanistan in December 2002. When the soldiers pulled a sandbag over his head, Dilawar complained that he could not breathe. He was then shackled and suspended from his arms for hours, denied water, and beaten so severely that his legs would have been amputated had he survived. When he was beaten with a baton, he would cry "Allah, Allah!," which guards found so amusing that they beat him some more just to hear him cry. During his final interrogation, soldiers told the delirious, injured prisoner that he would get medical attention after the session. Instead, he was returned to a cell and chained to the ceiling. Several hours later, a physician found him dead. By then, the interrogators had concluded that Dilawar was innocent and had simply been picked up after driving his new taxi by the wrong place at the wrong time.

Dilawar's death was predictable and preventable. The counterintelligence team was inexperienced; only two of its thirteen soldiers had ever conducted interrogations before arriving in Afghanistan. The officers knew that President Bush and Secretary Rumsfeld had ruled that the Geneva Conventions did not apply to Afghanistan. The interrogation policies were unclear. The base commander had ignored Red Cross protests about the treatment of prisoners, including the practice of suspending them. Army and intelligence officers who knew of the ongoing pattern of abuses at the Bagram facility did not intervene to stop them. In fact, another prisoner, Habibullah, had died at the same facility under similar circumstances six days before Dilawar's death.

An autopsy on December 13 found that Dilawar's death was a homicide, caused by extensive and severe "blunt force injuries to lower extremities complicating coronary artery disease" (inexplicably, "coronary artery disease" is typed on the death certificate in a different font). The Pentagon reported that the prisoner died of natural causes. Later, a coroner testified that Dilawar's legs were "pulpified" and that the body looked as if it had been "run over by a truck." Soldiers delivered the body and an English-language death certificate to his wife and two daughters in January 2003. The family could not read English.

1. What can you say?
Any legislator that votes for condoning this treatment is not worth keeping. This is the America we want to present to the world? I think not. Not in my name or the names of my children will we treat people in this way and claim legitimacy. Not in our names will we cover for leaders and legislators who promote and order war crimes. This is beyond the pale.

4. "Soldiers delivered the body and an English-language death certificate..."
"Well, here's the receipt for your husband, and here's my receipt for your receipt."

"But what have you done with his body?!"

Isn't that what brutal dictatorships and invading armies do?

is that it is not just "The CIA" doing these interrogation tactics. It is rampant through out all aspects of the DoD and the US military! I am reading "American Gulag" from the Sept. Harpers and it is just horrifying. I keep having to put it down because it makes me ill. But I have to say it should be a must read for our so called democratic leaders who are sitting on their asses and SILENT about what the US has become.

That article is where I found out about the deaths at Bagram and pulpified limbs. :puke:

where in the hell are our leaders?

11. It is. It's an orchard of "bad apples"
and the government encourages it, condones it, promotes it...and now they want to legalize it.

It's systemic government policy...and commanders in the field are doing little to preserve integrity and instead are going right along with it

I read about the deaths at Bagram a while back..I think at the ACLU site, if I recall correctly...Dilawar's death has been in the news but never fully reported in the news (go figure, right?)

13. I don't think the news ever reported he was innocent
he was guilty of driving his new taxi in the wrong place at the wrong time. US soldiers snatched him up, tortured him for five days until he died of his wounds. US SOLDIERS did this to him! Not CIA interrogators. This is totally lost on the US public and apparently on Democratic representatives as well.

Damn I am so pissed off.

I never thought that I would see Americans doing this in an "official" capacity. Outrageous.

This is worse what the Soviet police were doing in "The Gulag Archipelago"

16. That's how Compassionate Conservatives operate.
And to think these men/thugs/criminals (not worthy of being called soldiers) are never going to be prosecuted? They'll probably go home and do the same to their wives or kids or someone that ticks them off.

18. Makes one proud to be an American, doesn't it?
I've always wondered how the Germans must've felt when the real extent of the Nazi horrors were revealed. Of course, there were the willfully ignorant "good Germans" who "knew nothing".

I guess we know now.

22. Listen to Tim Golden's report in "The Bagram File"
He says that Dilawar's torturers knew he was innocent, all along.

The Bagram File
http://www.nytimes.com/packages/khtml/2005/05/19/international/20050520_ABUSE_FEATURE.html

In U.S. Report, Brutal Details of 2 Afghan Inmates' Deaths
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/20/international/asia/20abuse.html?ex=1274241600&en=4579c146cb14cfd6&ei=5088

~snip~

"Yet the Bagram file includes ample testimony that harsh treatment by some interrogators was routine and that guards could strike shackled detainees with virtual impunity. Prisoners considered important or troublesome were also handcuffed and chained to the ceilings and doors of their cells, sometimes for long periods, an action Army prosecutors recently classified as criminal assault.

Some of the mistreatment was quite obvious, the file suggests. Senior officers frequently toured the detention center, and several of them acknowledged seeing prisoners chained up for punishment or to deprive them of sleep. Shortly before the two deaths, observers from the International Committee of the Red Cross specifically complained to the military authorities at Bagram about the shackling of prisoners in "fixed positions," documents show."

One of us might meet the same fate.

The law has been broken, and we need to quit coddling the criminals. If these criminals get away with this, anarchy will ensue.

He could have been one of us......... He was. He is. No more.

27. Yup, I'm a farmer
I can see the equivalency of "farmer" to taxi driver in their minds. I'm dead serious, I can. No power, not one of the "elite", no connections - just a working stiff of minimal import.

It really could be one of us. That is why it hurts so much to read about this.

29. We, as a country....will pay for this..
every one of these deaths, are on our shoulders....no wonder we're hated around the world...to think...to think...that soldiers in our armed services could do this to another human being...how do they sleep at night?...how do they look in the mirror?...whatever happened to treating others as you would have others treat you??? I can't fathom how our men/women could do these things...other than right here, where is the outrage?? Where is the demand that it be stopped??
