96. Last time I looked, Hugo hadn't invaded any other countries yet
The thing that fumes the wingers the most is truth. I do like hit pieces though, it shows some are paying at least some kind of attention while engaged in this march of fascism.

Clear and present Mr. Danger
Published September 24, 2006

The speech lasts three and a half minutes, and would pass for a Saturday Night Live skit if it weren't etched in reality television.

With a herd of cattle in the background, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez bashes President Bush with searing contempt. He calls him a coward, a drunk, a donkey, an assassin, alcoholic, immoral, ignorant, mentally deranged, a liar, genocidal, and derides him as "Mr. Danger" 16 times in a video filmed last April.

If only we could laugh it off and go on to the next comedic schtick.

But sadly, the real deal is this:

Chavez is truly Mr. Danger.

It is tempting for the Bush administration to dismiss him as a whack job, if only Chavez didn't have worldly power, influence, and a precious commodity called oil.

The ironic twist here is that the United States is one of Chavez's best buddies.

The U.S. is the top buyer of Venezuelan oil, pumping billions of dollars into the economy that fuel Chavez's military buildup. But with Chavez's political leanings swaying ideologically opposite of President Bush, the relationship epitomizes dysfunctional, much like Ike and Tina Turner in their glory days.

the CEO of ExxonMobil the news about Global Warming. He basically said, "Eff that," and founded his own "institute" chock full of "scientists" who stated that there was no global warming that was the result of people buying and using his petroleum products.

Big Fat Bastard (recently retired) I call him. And, mark my words, he most probably was in Cheney's office with the now-infamous map of the Iraqi oil fields dividing things up with his Big Oil buddies BEFORE 9-11 and BEFORE we "had to" invade Iraq.

I've been buying Citgo for years and intend to continue to do so. ExxonMobil - no $ for you, unless it is an emergency.

9. Let me get this straight. MSNBC wants us to boycott CITGO
because Hugo Chavez insulted Bush? Screw that. That gives me all the more incentive to buy ALL my gas from CITGO.

Hell, I may buy my oil, wiper-fluid, coffee, lawn furniture, etc. from CITGO too. Maybe the one we should boycott is MSNBC and all the stupid floozies that are supposedly so incensed that Chavez pointed to Bushie's pointed tail.

That's brilliant. Indeed that pooping pooch does look horrified. :hurts:

My 9 year old just said, "I think we should do that too!"

The young are so wise.

And yes, we ALWAYS tank up at CITGO !!

I think the fact that MSNBC has even put the word out that Venezuala owns CITGO is a good thing! The more people that know this, the more that are likely to fill up there.

26. yeah, I'd rather buy from a Venez. pres who disses Bush rather than
from ME & multinational oil magnates who expect the US gov. to come running to help them increase profits and stop terrorist acts against their pipelines at every turn. Meanwhile the magnates couldn't give a shit about our oil and gas prices or how the "common man" is doing or being treated.

The only time they do anything for anyone other than increase their own war profiteering profits is when dimson convinces them to lower the price of oil and gas before an election.

21. They don't care if Citgo is willing to help
the poor in this country. Where are our oil companies stepping up to the plate to help the poor with home heating oil? I don't see even one... If they want a boycott, boycott those companies who keep getting billions in quarterly profits but do nothing to help the poor whatsoever... They should be ashamed and MSNBC should be ashamed...

I can't believe people in this country can't see the good this guy is doing... My husband was not so sure of him either because he had heard the usual spin, but when he just listened to Chavis speak, he said, "this guy is not a bad guy, whey do people say this about him?"....

Good question... Why do we only have conflicts with countries who have oil and gas????

Citgo is the workers friend. They are constantly the lowest price in town. I get my gas at either Costco or Citco. Shell, Exxon, and Mobile are as much as 30-40 cents higher. They must be inhaling fumes.
Chavez sent petroleum for the poor and elderly last winter. All I saw from those folks were higher profits. There are some things about Chavez that concern me but he is the elected leader of his country and some of these folks in power had just better get over it.

48. I read it and also read your assertion that having Ferguson on was
essentially the equivalent to advocacy: "they know that airing a program like that will incite people to boycott so they accomplish their goal regardless."

But since MSNBC also had the contrary "buy Citgo" view, given your logic and only taking one side of what was presented, one could then similarly assert that MSNBC's "goal" was to promote Citgo. I imagine that would be the kind of slant Billdo would take, by cherry picking "a minute" out of context and therefore creating a false impression of the discussion as a whole. Which is what you have done here. Or is it only not acceptable when only Billdo et. al. does that sort of thing?

42. I try to only buy Citgo. Exxon propagandizes Global Warming. BP lets
their infrastructure rot in Alaska, while they have record profits, spilling oil all over the tundra (while firing whistleblowers and threatening anyone who writes a bad report). Btw, Exxon still hasn't paid for the Valdez spill cleanup, but they have spent *hoards* of money on lawyers (probably more than it would have cost to clean it up) trying not to clean it up. And Chevron is just as bad as Exxon and BP and Texaco.

I'm buying Citgo. They don't propagandize against global warming. They clean up after themselves. They spend the most money on the poor of any of them (easily).

Within a week of hearing about it at my gas station in Tulsa, the station had completely metamorphosed into a Shell. I'm devastated.

57. I have bought Citgo and only Citgo...
...for 2 years now. Citgo is the only oil company, and I mean the *only* one, that doesn't donate money to the Bush-Republican war chest. Even Hess and BP/Amoco give some money to Republicans. Citgo does not. I have my own thoughts about Chavez and Venezuela which will wait until another post. For now I'll just say Chavez is refusing to go along with the globalization scam, opposing "free trade" ideology, and openly taking an oppositional stance toward Bush. The media has been trying to portray Chavez as some kind of third world tinpot dictator. I don't buy it. He was democratically elected and Venezuela is a multi-party democracy. The only reason Chavez is getting this treatment from the media is he is speaking out against Bush. I'm not drinking the media's Kool-Aid. Chavez is a genuine populist.

this sort of push for a boycot of Citgo seems highly inappropriate.

But either way, people will go where it's cheap.

83. i always buy citgo - because FREE AIR!
within a 3 mile radius of my house, at least 8 gas stations. only citgo has a free air pump when i need air in my tires. the rest charge at least a quarter, and the closest place charges 50 cents for air. FOR AIR!!!

i just really have a problem paying for air. so, when i need to fill my tires, i go to citgo. and when i need to fill my gas tank, i go to citgo too. because they don't charge me for air.

87. SNOPES explains this continuing Urban Legend
at Snopes.com

Neither a "buycott" nor a boycott is likely to accomplish much beyond the symbolic. In the first case, the Citgo brand (marketed by Citgo Petroleum Corporation, which has been owned by Petróleos de Venezuela,
the national oil company of Venezuela, since 1990) doesn't have nearly enough presence in the U.S. to satisfy demand; in the second case, boycotting a gasoline brand over political issues is problematic for a number of reasons (not least of which is the notion that threatening not to buy gasoline from someone who is threatening not to sell it to you doesn't sound like an effective ploy for either side).

Although Citgo may be owned by Petróleos de Venezuela, it is a formerly American company which is still headquartered in the U.S. (in Houston, Texas), employs 4,000 people, and supplies 14,000 independent retailers with gasoline and other petroleum products — Americans with no substantive connection to Venezuela who would be economically harmed by such an action. (Citgo also provides free or discounted heating oil to low-income communities and tribal reservations within the United States.) And, of course, in today's oil market Citgo could likely find alternative buyers for its products far more easily than the U.S. could make up the shortfall created by a cut-off of Venezuelan oil.

As we've noted in many other articles discussing various schemes regarding where and how people should purchase gasoline, the global and fungible nature of the world oil market doesn't really provide consumers with many effective opportunities to influence political issues through their buying patterns.

And, at Science Daily
Citgo to drop 14 percent of its stations

HOUSTON, July 12, 2006 (UPI) -- Venezuelan-controlled Citgo Petroleum Corp. is warning some 1,820 Citgo stations in the United States that it will stop supplying them with gasoline.

Citgo says its three U.S. refineries, which together process about 750,000 barrels per day of crude oil, cannot supply all its retail obligations. That means Citgo must purchase some 130,000 barrels per day of petroleum products to supply its 14,000 marketers, none of which the U.S. subsidiary of Venezuela's state-run energy conglomerate owns.

Therefore, Citgo said Tuesday, it will stop supplying about 14 percent of Citgo branded locations.

97. Buying gas at Citgo is NOT an urban legend...google boycott
citgo and see what you come up with. there are plenty talking about boycotting. msm is putting the idea out there for people to boycott. obviously citgo is not taking a loss on the oil it sells. the best way to show your support is to BUY CITGO.

93. Hmm... decisions, decisions
Let's see... buy gas from most stations and fund the corrupt Saudi regime.

Or buy Citgo, proceeds from which help the people of Venezuela and other people in need.

Oh, and Venezuelans have never committed terrorist attacks on the U.S. Can't say that about the Saudis.

In other words, I try to buy Citgo gas whenever possible. Luckily, there's a ton of them around here.

Maine Repubs say no to Chavez oil deal
http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D8K9GPKG0.htm

AUGUSTA, Maine
By GLENN ADAMS
Associated Press Writer

~snips~

Maine Republican legislative leaders on Thursday asked Democratic Gov. John Baldacci to avoid doing business in the future with Hugo Chavez, saying the Venezuelan leader has insulted President Bush and the United States by his remarks before the United Nations.

Under an agreement last winter, Citgo, the Houston-based subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, was to sell 8 million gallons of heating oil on the open market and donate what amounts to a 40 percent discount to Maine. It also donated 120,000 gallons of oil to 40 Maine homeless shelters.

Assistant House GOP leader Rep. Josh Tardy of Newport said Thursday that while Maine has economic problems, "we're not so desperate that we need handouts from a man who comes into our country and calls our president the devil in front of the whole world."

The House Republican leader, Rep. David Bowles of Sanford, said, "It was unfortunate that we struck a deal with (Chavez) last year for oil. The governor cannot make the same mistake again."

99. I have not only been buying Citgo
exclusively for at least the last year but our company gas card is Citgo. They have the lowest gas around here and several stations so haven't had to explain my preference with my company.

BTW, I do not approve of Chavez' speech at the UN as I don't approve of the chimp calling other countries evil. Taking the high road and talking about solutions to problems causing the rift(s) between nations would have been a lot more useful as it had an international audience.
