Bush Rages: “I am not Beelzebub, Lord of Sulfur”
I loved this article!! The headline alone made me giggle for ten minutes.

Bush Rages: “I am not Beelzebub, Lord of Sulfur”

If you’re a lefty, it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Chavez should give lessons in public speaking. His appearance was like a clap of thunder; waving Chomsky with one hand and pummeling Bush with the other….

<snip>

Chavez held-forth like a preacher at a brothel; scattering the bodies and kicking open the windows to let the sunlight in. He delivered one, ferocious roundhouse punch after another….

Boom, boom, boom…until the crowd rose in a thunderous 5 minute ovation. (which was carefully omitted from the TV coverage).

12. Here's the video clip
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-c5PPIEziA

It didn't show the ovation, but it did show everybody tittering and smiling when Chavez was speaking. Probably the most entertaining speech since Kruschev beat his shoe on the podium! How could you not give it a standing ovation, and a raspberry to Bush for good measure?

20. Rachel Maddow reported a long standing ovation on her newscast that night.
She mentioned that he had received the longest standing ovation in the history of the United Nations. Check the report on Democracy Now! I think I heard Amy Goodman mention it also, but I'm not sure.

21. Reports that say he got a standing ovation at the UN
Edited on Sat Sep-23-06 06:58 PM by Generic Other
Others say he got the ovation after speaking at a New York college. Fox News is reporting "Political Parties Unite Against Chavez."

Mathaba News Network:
A Courageous Man Speaks Out - Hugo Chavez Was In Rare Form at the UN
Hugo Chavez delivered an impassioned speech yesterday to the assembled delegates who came to hear him. At its end, the delegates showed their appreciation and support by giving him a standing ovation. http://mathaba.net/0_index.shtml?x=543518

The Jamaica Observer:
And for a dramatic example of how the unpopularity of the Iraq war is not just a problem at home for President Bush, compare the kind of reception Bush received this week at the UN with the tumultuous standing ovation world leaders gave former president Clinton in the same forum. http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/columns/html/20060921T220000-0500_113181_OBS__THE_OLD_ORDER_CHANGETH___.asp

The China Post:
Chavez's words drew tentative giggles at times from the audience, but also applause at the end of the speech and when he called Bush the devil. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/international/detail.asp?ID=91034&GRP=D

The Conservative Voice:
Indicating strong support, after his speech, UN members gave Chavez a standing ovation and rousing applause for several minutes. http://www.theconservativevoice.com/article/18596.html

WashPost:
Chavez generated the loudest burst of applause for a world leader at the summit with his unbridled attack on what he characterized as American militarism and capitalism…
<snip>
The applause for Chavez was recognition of the "sheer entertainment factor" of his undiplomatic speech, said Nancy Soderberg, a former senior U.S. diplomat at the United Nations. "Those speeches get so boring."
But Chavez would never be able to translate the popular reaction to his rant into political support for his positions because, while the moment "might be emotionally satisfying," the delegates "know this is not the real world," said Jeffrey Laurenti, a seasoned U.N. analyst at the Century Foundation.

24. Somebody has to have the audio, no?
I remember Sam Delaney talking about listening to a Castro speech transmitted by a blaok-owned radio station while watching TV at the same time. (Sometime in the mid-60s.) He was shocked to hear wild applause break out on the radio just as the TV station went into commentary.

Come on people! Itthe tape is out there, it has to be somewhere on the internets by now.

2. I was under the impression that the Devil was a clever guy.
But on the other hand, the President operates on the rule of "never tell the truth."

So frankly, I don't know what to think.

clever enough to stay in power in spite (or if you will, because) of all the lies.

16. Chavez is an excellent speaker ... Dear Leader has to be audio
fed his lines through an small ear-piece. Even then he royally f**ks up unless the topic is WAR. :puke: Remember how he turned the pages of his coloring reference notebook like a smart ass who could care less if The World Knows our pResident is too much of an idiot to NOT be audio fed his speech.

Nope, Dear Leader might not be "El Diablo" incarnate, but Chavez made his point --> Dear Leader is pure evil. :grr:

25. Reverse-speak is a common feature of generative grammar among the Bush-men
This is known as a Negative Intensifier Clause.

Often used to mean "am not precisely",

as in the statement:

"I am NOT Beelzebub, Lord of Sulphur!"

Chomsky could provide more insight into this, but to put it in layman's terms, among the Bush-men, "AM NOT" usually translates to "IS". Example: "IS our children learning?"

In this case, "IS" is used as an unknown tense in standard English, the negative future conditional progressive, roughly translating to normal English as: "I am assuming our children are not and will continue to not be learning?" This is the reverse of the Irish and Welsh tense, "I do be", as in "I do be learning to play the flute."
